Have any of you seen the movie about St Therese of Lisieux called “Therese”? It was made around 2003/2004…can’t remember:o

I really love this movie 😃

St Therese is one of my favourite Saints and her book has helped me soo much. (Story of a Soul)
When I first saw this movie over the summer, I just felt so much peace afterwards. I was going through a lot of anxiety at the time and it really calmed me down and directed me to what’s important. Also, on a more personal level, - I’m really drawn to innocence and goodness and most movies out there are filled with so much immorality and hatred. This one though was just so wonderful. It really filled me with joy - just like the book. btw, the director is a Catholic I believe and he really put his heart into this movie. And the main actress, Lindsay Younce, she actually converted to Catholicism!! 🙂

I also REALLY like the music in this movie. It’s just somehow perfect for St Therese. 😃 it was composed by a Carmelite nun!! how awesome is that! 🙂

lol I cried at the end of the movie when she died… I think maybe many of us have Saints who dont just feel like ‘historical characters’ but like our friends in Heaven, who are watching over us and praying for us. I feel that St Therese is one of those Saints for me. She’s done a lot for me by her intercession and helped lead me to the Church. I even had some little miracles happen related to her. It’s very true what she said, that after her death she’ll send down a “shower of roses” from Heaven. I’d love so much to meet her someday.

Here is what St Therese herself said about Heaven and the friendships found there:

"No envious glances will be seen; the happiness of every one of the elect will be the happiness of all. With the Martyrs we shall be like to the Martyrs; with the Doctors we shall be as the Doctors; with the Virgins, as the Virgins; and just as the members of a family are proud of one another, so shall we be of our brethren, without the least jealousy.

Who knows even if the joy we shall experience in beholding the glory of the great Saints, and knowing that by a secret disposition of Providence we have contributed thereunto, who knows if this joy will not be as intense and sweeter perhaps, than the happiness they will themselves possess.

And do you not think that on their side the great Saints, seeing what they owe to quite little souls, will love them with an incomparable love? Delightful and surprising will be the friendships found there - I am sure of it. The favored companion of an Apostle or a great Doctor of the Church, will perhaps be a young shepherd lad; and a simple little child may be the intimate friend of a Patriarch. Oh! how I long to dwell in that Kingdom of Love… "

(it’s so cool because she became a Doctor of the Church yet she’s also “the Little Flower” :))

I so much long to dwell in that Kingdom of Love too.
 
Monica… I have the film “Therese”, too. And really liked it. Makes me cry… whenever I watch it. And her autobiography “Story of a Soul” is in my top 3 spiritual books of all time. I love St. Therese!

Here is another film, that I think you would really like. I have it… and I’ve watched it over and over. It’s more of a documentary style film… but it is filmed in the actual places where St. Therese lived. The Martin homes… and the Carmel of Lisieux. It’s really a good film. Hope you can get it. I don’t think I’ve seen the movie but I read her story of a soul. It’s a beautiful masterpiece. I knew someone recently converted and told him to pray to her for a flower because she always gives you one if you ask. He did and the next day his little daughter gave him a flower . This was the only time anyone had ever given him a flower. I told him he should pray to St Therese for his daughter. I hope he does. She is the patroness of Australia, along with our Lady help of christians. Her remains were brought here a few yrs ago and I went and touched the casket and prayed for everything. She is a truly great saint. God bless.👍 🙂

When St. Luke Productions announced that they were going to do “Therese,” we were excited and even signed petitions to have our local movie theater show it. They never did, but we purchased the DVD, and were disappointed when we viewed it.

The problem for us was, they used too old of a woman to play the part of young Therese. Her acting like a 15 year old, made her look silly. They should’ve stayed with the child actress they used, for Therese’s earlier years.

The thing is, my wife and myself saw the live play, “Therese of Lisieux,” by St. Luke Productions, and it was excellent!
The actress who played St. Therese, would’ve been better for the movie. The problem, which is actually a good one, she gave up acting and entered the Carmelites. Leonardo wrote and directed this play.

We’ve also met Leonardo Defilippis personally, and he is an excellent actor, writer and producer. However, the movie “Therese,” his wife wrote and directed the film. She apparently doesn’t have the skill her husband has.

Anyway, that was my wife’s and my opinion on the film. Come to think of it, our OCDS group generally didn’t liked it either. But they also saw the live play, Therese of Lisieux. So I guess when you see a superb quality play, and then a lesser quality performance in the movie, I guess it makes the difference of seeing it as good or bad.

I have the DVD of “Therese”. I never got to see it when it was in the theaters-closest it came to my hometown was Syracuse (Phooey!).

I agree with what JimOCDS said-the actress chosen to portray her was too old-looking. Nothing was said about her First Communion day. I’m kind of at a loss about some of the other things I didn’t like about it. Why can’t filmmakers-ESPECIALLY a Catholic one like Leonardo diFilippis-do a movie on a Saint’s life that gives the facts, with no dramatic license?

I did cry at the end, though…the music is beautiful, too. I bought a tape of it in 1997, when I visited a Carmel in Flemington, NJ-seven years before the movie was made! I used to play it on my car’s tape player; but it moved me so much I would end up crying! Not the thing to do when you’re driving! I also have a CD of the movie soundtrack.

I really love her too. I used to not believe in the intercession of Saints, I just didn’t think they could hear me. But for some reason, I said a novena to her anyway cause I really needed someone to pray for me. And I received roses, in really obvious ways! 🙂 needless to say I started believing in asking Saints for prayer. She gave me so many signs of her intercession. But then other times I got nothing and I think that’s because God wanted me to rely on faith 😉 but I’m so thankful that she prayed for me and it was definitely answered.

Sorry that you didn’t like it… well that’s alright, I can see what you mean about the actress being older; - I think the main reason I liked this movie is that it just really encouraged me.

That’s so great that the actress in the play became a Carmelite!! 😃

I love the soundtrack, it’s beautiful 🙂 I want to get it. Because sometimes I just want to listen to music like that.

I agree totally, Jim. I, too, saw the play and that actress was far better at expressing the depth of St. Therese’s spirituality as well as the spriteliness of her personality. The actress in the movie was not very convincing of either.
 
Many movies on saints have them speaking with some mystical, otherworldly way of talking that doesn’t do a very good job at convincing us that she was a real person. I don’t really care for American accents with French characters either. I own the movie, and I’m glad I do, but I can tell it’s a low-budget film.

I agree also. Several years ago our Lay Carmelite Community sponsored the play in our area. It was excellent! At the end there wasn’t a dry eye in the house.

After that we went to see the movie, and I was very disappointed.
This is not to say that the film was without merit… and it did help many to understand Therese better…but it definitely did not measure up to the live one-woman play.

I am glad you liked the movie and the actress! Many did.

I think I was “spoiled” by seeing the one-woman play which was excellent, and very moving.
 
Yes I saw the movie also! I thought it was wonderful!👍

I hope more movies like this come out in the future!

I saw two live plays with Leonardo Defilippis.

Francis of Assisi and Maximilian: Saint of Auschwitz.

I had purchased Maximilian: Saint of Auschwitz, prior to seeing the live play, and I wondered how Leonardo could pull if off, being he’s the only actor in the entire film. The play was excellent!

Leonardo is an excellent actor, and he plays the parts so well, that you don’t see him or any trace of the other characters, as he changes scenes.

If you happen to see the plays by St Luke Productions in your area, don’t miss them, they are awesome. The actors and the crew stay after to talk with people, over refreshments(if the host parish serves them). My wife and myself got to chat with Leonardo for about a half hour. He’s truly an amazing person and artist.

I thought she did a good job, too. She did seem a bit “old” for the part of the 15 year old Therese, just entering the Carmel; but in all fairness… sometimes… due to budgetary restraints… a director may have to find an actor/actress who can span a great number of years… in the life of the character they portray.

So, in the first scenes… you have to use your imagination… just a little. Actress Lindsey Younce was probably closer to the age of Therese, at her death… 24. But I think she did a pretty good job. 👍

My opinion is they could’ve used the young actress who played the child Theresa. She looked closer to 15 years old than the woman actress.
