Dalmatics on deacons and cassocks on priests,
habits on nuns and immovable feasts,
bishops in soutanes with big, gaudy rings –
these are a few of my favorite things.

Devotions to Mary, novenas and stations,
fasting and penance on Days of Rogation,
High Mass and Low Mass and papal blessings –
these are a few of my favorite things.

Rosaries and incense and fiddleback vestments,
BINGO on Mondays with homemade refreshments,
statues of angels with halos and wings –
these are a few of my favorite things.

When RENEW strikes!
When the rail’s gone!
When I’m feeling sad,
I simply pop into a Solemn High Mass
and then I don’t feel so baaaaaad!

I completely agree, but i have seen vastly more deacons without dalmatic than with at most OF masses.
 
I understandthe financial aspect.
However, I know of multiple parishes around me that have bought new chasibules (simply for taste, not of necessity- with excess money) and only gotten the stole for the deacon. So, even if the dalmatic is the formal norm, I know that many choose to ignore it.

This could be because a dalmatic requires a different fit than a stole does. My parish has 2 deacons. One is 6’4" and weighs about 250. The other one is about 5’8" and weighs 150 if that. They can both wear the same stole, they cannot both wear the same dalmatic.

Most of my Deacon friends buy their own dalmatics so that they fit properly.
 
We have never been in a parish that bought any vestments for the priests or deacons. My husband has bought all his own dalmatics and stoles. It took him about 10 years to get a complete set of dalmatics. I say complete but he does not have a rose dalmatic only a rose stole.
 
Most priests I know do not have rose vestments either.
It seems silly, to me and them, to spend that kind of money for something they can wear only twice a year.
 
I agree that it is a great teaching tool.
The few clergy I know who have rose vestments had them made by friends or family, so the expense was not great. However, there are not many people who are willing or able to do that anymore. :confused:
 
Interestingly, In our diocese the word went out - nothing in writing - “discouraging” deacons from wearing dalmatics. The concern seemed to be not wanting to “confuse the faithful” by seeming to blur the differences between priest and deacon. Several pastors have outright forbidden their deacons from wearing them. Even in Masses with the Bishop at the Cathedral, the Deacon of the Word and Deacon of the Altar typically are in stole only.
 
I’m curious Deacon Jeff, the deacon at my parish told me he only wears his dalmatic during Holy Week. Is it his option to wear the dalmatic?
