Well, the apples don’t fall far from the tree. If the parents didn’t set a good example for their daughter on how to stand up for one’s moral principles while still being loving and not harassing, and instead react in this sort of extreme way, then it makes sense that daughter is extreme also.
I’m guessing this story is so popular because it plays into the stereotype of Christians as annoying moralists. Also, as much as I hate to say this, many families do have one or more members who take it upon themselves to constantly push or lecture other family members on morals. Not just over gay lifestyle, but over heterosexual behavior and even non-sexual stuff like what church they attend, religious practices, etc. Often it is a case of an overzealous convert who decides to constantly harp on what the rest of the family is doing wrong, or even someone from a whole family of a particular faith who has gotten suddenly super-religious or very traditional in their practice. So a whole lot of people can relate to having that experience.
In any event, I don’t think airing the family conflict all over the public Internet is helpful to actually resolving the situation.
