They came

I just wanted to update those who had gotten involved with my previous post titled, “The Mormons are Coming”.

They did in fact end up coming. It was a good meeting, (for those Mormon posters, yes I was respectful).

We talked for about an hour and a half. There were questions that I had that they were not able to answer and they said they would get back to me. I did end up getting my BoM that I wanted. They originally said they would lend it to me, but I said I wanted to write in it. They finally said I could have it as long as I didn’t desecrate it. I think I have better things to do than that

One thing that stuck out to me that majorly concerned me was our discussion on abortion. They basically said they were okay with it as long as the mother had thought and prayed long and hard about it and were doing what they felt God was calling them to do. I had big problems with that. There were other things of course that we discussed that I had my concerns about, but this more than anything else had me going huh?

Anyways, it was good. They were nice people. They got to see that there are Catholics who read and know the Scriptures and that we can be very respectful towards them and their beliefs. They also got a little Church history from a perspective that they were probably not so use to. All in all, not too bad.

I remembered your previous post. I’m glad it went well for all involved. Did you feed them anything? I always think that if some were to come to my house that I would feed them considering they probably get sick of the food they are living off of!

Did you feel completely confident when talking about your faith? I feel like I would draw a blank when asked a question, but then the answer would come to me later on.

I offered food and drinks but they said they were fine. I think originally they walked in and they were probably like “uh oh” considering all the “idols” (Just kidding) I have around my house. They probably didn’t think they would be around very long.

I was confident, and so were they. We had a couple of really good discussions, but it was the abortion subject that, like I said, stuck out to me.

I also asked them about how they felt about what was happening with Obama and the economy, but they said they are have not been watching the news. I didn’t quite understand if they were not watching because they didn’t want to or because they weren’t allowed to.

Oh, and they were fans of “The Office”.

About the abortion thing - they aren’t as free about it as you wrote. In order to be baptized into the LDS church and if you had an abortion or participated in one you need to get a dispensation like thingie from Salt Lake. They do an interview with all candidates prior to scheduling the baptism with Mission leadership.
As i recall - the only reason to have an abortion ‘ok’d’ by the bishop ( and he shouldbe consulted beforehand or you may risk disfellowshipping) is rape, incest and health of the mother.
As a catholic I know those reasons are unacceptable, but just wanted to clarify the LDS position in this manner.

Media - LDS Missionaries are on a media lock-down. they can only read scriptures and LDS books (select titles). the have NO access to TV or internet and are not permitted to read newspapers or magazines of any kind (even the Deseret News, I believe). So they are totally clueless about world and local events unless people tell them as they knock on doors.

I didn’t think they were portraying the accurate LDS teaching on it. Who knows, they may have seen two young people and assumed that my wife and I were liberal (we did tell them that we were originally from Seattle as well) and maybe they were trying to sell their church’s teaching on it a little bit Who knows? They could just completely not know what their Church teaches on the matter. They knew where I stood at the end of it anyways.

I did end up getting my BoM that I wanted

One thing–don’t expect to find Mormonoid doctrine in the BofM. You won’t.

Whatever the current Mormon doctrine is will usually be found in Doctrine and Covenants, not the BofM.

For more information, find a little book by Colleen Ralston called COLOR ME CONFUSED.

BTW–when the BofM was first published, deceased Living Prophet Joseph Smith called it “the most correct book of any on earth.”

It’s been changed 4000 times. Verses were added in 1983.
