Dear Brothers and Sisters,

St. Louis de Montfort, in his treatise on “True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin” continues to describe those whom God will send, as he wrote in paragraoh 54: “…in union with Mary, they will crush the head of Satan with their heel, that is, their humility, and bring victory to Jesus Christ.” Today he continues his description in paragraphs 57 and 58:
  1. They will be like thunder-clouds flying through the air at the slightest breath of the Holy Spirit. Attached to nothing, surprised at nothing, troubled at nothing, they will shower down the rain of God’s word and of eternal life. They will thunder against sin, they will storm against the world, they will strike down the devil and his followers and for life and for death, they will pierce through and through with the two-edged sword of God’s word all those against whom they are sent by Almighty God.
  2. They will be true apostles of the latter times to whom the Lord of Hosts will give eloquence and strength to work wonders and carry off glorious spoils from his enemies. They will sleep without gold or silver and, more important still, without concern in the midst of other priests, ecclesiastics and clerics. Yet they will have the silver wings of the dove enabling them to go wherever the Holy Spirit calls them, filled as they are with the resolve to seek the glory of God and the salvation of souls. Wherever they preach, they will leave behind them nothing but the gold of love, which is the fulfillment of the whole law.
These words give us much to ponder in our hearts, prayerfully asking the Holy Spirit to guide us in our own day. Are these great men to come or have they come? God certainly has sent men like St. Maximillian Kolbe and St. John Paul II in my own lifetime but still, I wonder are there yet more to come? Only God knows and we can continue to hope that these prophetic words God gave to St. Louis de Montfort, which have been approved by the Church and read by many for centuries now, are certainly worth pondering today.

Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Your Faithful. kindle in us the Fire of Your Love. Jesus, we trust in You! Mary, Mother of the Church, pray for us. St. Joseph pray for us. St. John the Baptist whose martyrdom we celebrate today, Aug. 29, pray for us. St. Louis de Montfort, pray for us.

Dear patricius,

Thanks again for your “heart” – I believe you do listen to St. Louis de Montfort as he spoke by God’s Grace from his heart to all of the people of his own time as well as to those in every age to come. Ultimately all those who are seeking God will find Him and they will hear the Voice of the One True Shepherd, Jesus Christ by whom we are led by the power of the Holy Spirit, as Mary was led to say: “Yes!” - “Be it done to me according to your word.” (cf Luke 1:38)

St. Louis de Montfort’s words you quoted: "Attached to nothing, surprised at nothing , troubled at nothing… " also touched my heart. It keeps amazing me how much more I hear each time I read this treatise! 🙂 Yes, by God’s Grace let us ask our Mother to help us learn to do the Truth we hear.

Jesus, You are our Way, our Truth and our Life, and Mary is given to us to help us receive you with open hearts as she received you, by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Dear brother,

I know you told me you have difficulties with your weight, and I’m sure you’ve asked Mary’s help; those words St. Louis used are words I want to remember too – I can get anxious over almost “anything” – but I think the root cause is my “self-love” as I hear it more and more, in my listening to St. Louis de Montfort and so many of the other saints, whom I 've read like St. John of the Cross, St. Teresa of Avila and St. Therese of Lisieux.

By God’s Grace God can deliver us from ALL our fears…He can enable us to be like our Mother Mary: humble and faithful as Jesus is in His Sacred Humanity. So humble in His Passion and so faithful to the Will of His Father, who gave Him through the power of His Holy Spirit, to Mary, and through her to save us!

O Jesus living in Mary, come and live in Your servants…
Totus Tuus!
your sister

So much to ponder over in those passages. “They will thunder against sin”…it would be nice to hear some of that in a homily sometimes. Our church is in great need.

Dear maryslegion,

We need to keep remembering the homily is an essential part of the Liturgy of the Eucharist, and the ordained clergy have a grave responsibility to feed God’s people, with God’s Word as well as His Body, AND the laity also are called to the same holiness to which St. Louis de Montfort and all the saints, especially Our Mother Mary show us in their lives.

Mary our Mother, and St. Joseph were “lay” persons and not “ordained clergy”. Yet we look to them as Mother of the Church and as Joseph guarded Mary and the Child Jesus, so now he is guarding and protecting the Church by his intercession with Mary and Jesus before the Father in Heaven.

As lay persons, and I say this especially to you and to myself who have joined the Legion of Mary as “Active Members” along with anyone who may be reading this who is also a Legion Member involved in the Spiritual and Corporal Works of Mercy done with Mary, or any Auxiliary Members whose Daily Rosary and Legion Prayers with Mary also serve God. We need to remember the Church is composed of Clergy and People of God. There is a ministerial priesthood and there is also a common priesthood of the laity given at Baptism. The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches this in paragraph 1268 below:

CCC 1268 - The baptized have become “living stones” to be “built into a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood.” By Baptism they share in the priesthood of Christ, in his prophetic and royal mission. They are “a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s own people, that [they] may declare the wonderful deeds of Him who called [them] out of darkness into his marvelous light.” Baptism gives a share in the common priesthood of all believers. (words in bold are my own emphasis and not bold in the Catechism itself)

Servant of God Frank Duff, was so inspired by St. Louis de Montfort’s treatise on “True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin” after making his Total Consecration, he met with his parish priest and others who wanted to “Live” the Consecration they prayed. It was more than just words! They prayed to the Holy Spirit and prayed the Rosary for guidance on Sept. 7, 1921 – vigil of the Feast of Mary Nativity on Sept. 8 – from then on Sept.7 has been celebrated as the “birth of the Legion of Mary”.

Yes, our Church is in great need and all her children, clergy and people need to hear words St. Louis de Montfort was given to write for the Church. St. Louis de Montfort spent most of his life preaching “Missions” to lay people. His writings are for the whole Church.

Thanks so much for your reply, dear maryslegion. Please let us continue to pray for the Church, by God’s Grace, remembering Mary as Mother and Model for the whole Church. Typically I give a “long” response to many “short” replies like yours! 🙂

Thank you for this informative reply! The CCC quote was such a blessing. The baptized have become living stones to build the Church. We need to pray for those baptized who have left the church to come back.
