Hello all!

I’m currently in RCIA and loving it!

I grew up in a family that wanted us to find what religion works for us; so I’ve studied the bible here and there, but never really sat down and read it to familiar myself with the scriptures. I know the stories every child knows, but I want to familiar myself with each of them. Problem is that I love to highlight and write things down in my bibles, but I’ve had little luck with finding ones that have thick pages where they are less likely to bleed through them. What NAB bible has thick pages where you won’t bleed through with the highlighter or pen?

That is why I went with a Kindle Fire. I can highlight and make notes to my heart’s content.

You might also want to consider the type of highlighter or pen you will be using. There appear to be some that won’t bleed through paper or at least they are advertised not to. random example 1, random example 2.

It might be the case that with those kinds of highlighters any NAB Bible will do.

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops sells a NAB Bible (Personal Edition) that uses 24-lb paper, here. You might be able to get it cheaper elsewhere, such as Amazon.com.

Have you used colored pencils? How do you highlight
larger parts of text with them since they’re so thin compared to markers or gel highlighters?

It would be great to have pages thick enough that you don’t see the printed letters on the reverse side through the one you are reading. I am looking as well but “Bible paper” seems to be what Bibles are printed on.

You are not the first to encounter this difficulty. 🙂 Go to Amazon (or anywhere) and search for “Bible Highlighter”. There are many different kinds of highlighters out there that don’t bleed through thin Bible paper.

I have a few NAB bibles (the Didache Bible and the New Catholic Answer Bible) that have thicker pages than the really cheap Bibles, but they are still thinner than regular paper. Perhaps one of the large heirloom type Bibles. Their pages are also thicker than most Bibles, but still sometimes a bit thinner than standard paper.

I think getting the right type of highlighters would be your best bet.

What about using colored pencils to highlight?

That’s certainly possible, and I know people who do use colored pencils. I’m always afraid I’m going to tear the page with a sharpened pencil, though.

Back in the day when I carried paper Bibles, I would take a colored pencil and draw a box around the passages I wished to “hi-light”, make some **** or some arrows on the top of the page, flag the page in a way where it would stand out to me (those little “sign here” post its work well).

At first I was trying to think what word you could have possibly said that got censored. Then I realized you probably really meant that you drew some asterisks. 😄

Ok, I never thought of that. I recently bought some gel highlighters and have used them before. I wasn’t really thrilled with them the first time but these sounded good so I thought I’d like them better. I’ve only used it once on my new Bible and think I might go back to highlighter markers.

No, I also liked colored ink pens (old fashioned, non gel, ballpoint ink pens).
