Have any of you tried Thin Within or The Light Weigh? I was just looking for some feedback about the different programs. I know that they’re very similar, but The Light Weigh is a Catholic program and Thin Within is more non-denominational/evangelical.

So can any of you tell me if you’ve done either of these programs, what you think about them, and if you were successful with them?

Thanks. :bowdown2:

hi, scout -

i haven’t heard of either - but am assuming they are a bible-based eating program?

i have recently read “the Maker’s Diet,” and “Body by God,” in which there are some good reasons why we should eat that which God has made and man hasn’t messed with, so to speak, but the first book is very legalistic when it comes to food choices and takes most of its inferences from Leviticus. that isn’t to say there isn’t a ton of wisdom in why we should eat certain things and abstain from others; however, it isn’t what goes into a man that defiles Him. (i debate this with my friends all the time!)

i would, however, stay as far away from “Weigh Down Workshop” as possible if you were interested in finding out more about that program - gwen shamblin is just that - a sham - and is very heretical.

if you find out more, especially on the one you believe is to be Catholic, let me know 😉

thanks!

found the link for lightweigh - lightweigh.com/ will investigate further…

Hi,
Thin Within is awesome and although it’s Protestant, I see nothing wrong with it. There is a lot of required Bible reading in which we use our own Bibles to look up scripture. I’m only on Chapter 4, but the essence of the book is: all food is good & we can eat whatever we want to with 2 conditions, we MUST be hungry and we MUST stop before we are full. In Chapter 1, the readers are instructed to discard all diet books, pills, etc. from the house & rely soley on God’s word to loose the weight and develop a health lifestyle.

Good Luck & Blessings,
Shannin

Some good additional (easy) activites you could do:

Stretch everyday, improving flexibilty, and giving you a more productive workout.

Leg lifts, lie down flat on your back, and raise your feet about six inches (not too high though, that makes it easier 😉 )

Not sure what this is called, but lie down on your stomach, clasp your hands as if you are in prayer, and place your elbows wide of you shoulder blades. Push up, hold for 20 secs.

The description may not be perfect, your arms should kind of form a triangle, put the prayer hands under your chin while laying down

www.bodyforlife.com - lost 25 pounds in last few months. excellent program. Cardio one day 45min. Upper body next 45 min, Legs next day 45 min.

six days a week. One free day of no exercise and laxer eating standards. website okay, but book is excellent. My brother did it for years and is now a triathalete. I know others at gym who use it to learn balanced approach to fitness.

I am in week three of the Light Weigh. I think this program is God’s answer for my weight problem. There is nothing that is nutritionally unsound and it gives you some powerful spiritual tools to help you in this battle. It is very Catholic.

I wanted to join a LW group about a year ago, only to find there were none in my area. I felt I didn’t have the time to become a coordinator to start one at my parish. Finally this summer decided that I needed to do this, and boy do I wish I had done it earlier. The “burden” of being coordinator is non-existent; there is very little extra to be done over what any member does…basically unlock the door, make sure the Bible study doesn’t exceed time limits, and pop the video in the VCR.

Before you think about any diet or surgery or drug or program that introduces artificial foods or means (something you won’t do for the rest of your life) please look into this and see if it is right for you.

brenda, thank you for that information!! i just ordered the materials (for review) and am planning on submitting a request to our monsignor to moderate a group, especially since you said it is a no-pressure deal 😉

until then, i feel like i am in a holding pattern with this blasted halloween candy in the house … grrr. all things are lawful for me, but alas, not all things are beneficial.

brenda tell me - what has changed about your approach to weight loss? is it a challenge? did you weigh and measure yourself and have you lost weight/inches? do you feel closer to the Lord in this journey, now, too?

sorry to ask so many questions, but this has me intrigued 🙂

Hi Penni,

Beware, this may be long! And I share your problem with candy! Actually almost anything sweet!

What has changed in my approach to weight loss? Basically I had come to the conclusion that I could not do it myself…been through just about every diet program/plan there ever was, lost weight only to gain it back. I had even thought of stomach stapling surgery. I finally “got it” that if it was something I could do on my own, it would have already been done and over and forgotten. I finally rested in the knowledge that if it is God’s Will for me to be at a normal weight, it will only be with His help.

As a Catholic convert, I am totally in love with the Church that Jesus gave us here on earth. So it made perfect sense to me that a weight loss program using the riches of the Church would be an ideal way to find out if it is God’s Will for me to be a normal weight. (This isn’t a golden parachute clause----if I give up and quit, I won’t just go around saying, well, I guess it wasn’t God’s Will! And I am not saying that this program is the only way that God could provide someone with the means for weight loss, just that it is the right one for me.)

Sometimes it is more of a challenge than others, but with the tools the program gives, it is often surprisingly very easy! In some ways, the biggest challenge for me is to weigh myself only once a week! For many years I’ve been in the habit of weighing myself daily, and then judging the day accordingly. On the Light Weigh, you are to weigh only once a week.

I did not measure before the start of the program. I did record my “before” weight. At the end of week one, I had only lost 1.5#, and was a little discouraged, but determined to stick with the program. At the end of week two, I had lost a total of 5.5#.

Yes, I am growing closer to God. The program is designed to help us take the focus off ourselves, and put it where it belongs, on Him. I think in the long run it will affect many more areas of my life and how I live it than just weight issues.

Penni, if you choose to do the program, I would love to hear how you like it!

Thanks for the info everyone. I’ve been doing Thin Within, but there is no support system for it-which is a bit discouraging. I’ve thought about doing The Light Weigh, but can’t find anyone else around here doing that, either. No one in my parish is doing it, and I’m extremely shy about suggesting it because I’m new at the Parish and a new Catholic-just converted a few months ago-and I just don’t feel able to lead something like that.

I might begin to look to other parishes and see if the program might be going on somewhere else. Or, I might look around my own parish and see if someone might want to lead it there.

Again, thanks for all the wonderful (name removed by moderator)ut. It really helped a lot. :blessyou:

Hi Scout,

If you are interested in Light Weigh, call their 800 number listed on their web site. They will know if there is a group in your area.

I understand your reasons for not wanting to coordinate a group right now. Hopefully there will be one already going close to you.

You know, if the Politics forum goes away, since the election is over, do you think Karl Keating might replace it with something like a forum support group for Thin Within or Light Weigh. Actually a weight management and fitness forum.
We could discuss methods that work, help each other stay motivated. Include some Bible reading with it for further spiritual inspiration.

What do you think? Would anyone be interested in something like that?

My wife had some good success with both the Light Weigh and with Gwen Shamblin’s stuff.

Her friends didn’t.

I don’t think her friends got the point that these methods aren’t “diets” in the usual sense. They are about spirituality and about changing the way you think and feel about food. They watch the tapes and then go right back to talking about eating as if they were dieting.

If you want to look at it as a spiritual journey, go for it. If you can’t let go of typical dieting mentality then don’t waste your time or money.

Orthodox alert: Shamblin is not Catholic, but a lot of people (including Julie) have had success with her stuff. I’ve also seen some of the Light Weigh tapes. I’ll tell you what, that Light Weigh lady has an incredible beaming smile; she really seems like she’s enjoying life every moment. I’ve not heard of Thin Within.

Alan, I met her in Wichita at the Catholic Family Conference in August. (Were you and your wife there?) She does have that smile! And she definitely comes across as being totally and sincerely being in love with Christ and His Church!

No, I wasn’t there. I only saw her on videotape. Oh yeah, my wife says her name is Suzanne Fowler. We didn’t realize she was to be in Wichita or we probably would have been there!

To those who might have been confused by the “orthodox alert” on my last post:
Gwen Shamblin is the non-Catholic; her product is called “Weigh Down”
Suzanne Fowler IS Catholic; her product is “The Light Weigh” My wife Julie studies and journals every day in her Light Weigh journal.

I can speak for the Light Weigh (www.lightweigh.com) - it is a totally Catholic program to get a new perspective on eating. It is not a “diet” but a spiritual growth plan that has a side benefit of losing weight. You will lose any disordered attachment to food - or other adictions. The support of others is wonderful and the people at the 800 number are also very supportive.

You can eat whatever you feel like - in moderation. Listen to your body. You never eat unless you’re really hungry (she explains the different levels of hunger) and then never overeat. So simple.

In a year, I lost 60 pounds and grew in my prayer life!

seek1st, that is awesome!!

i am so excited about my materials coming in…i’ll let everyone know how it goes. even if i get a handle on my (apparent?) food addiction through prayer and Scripture, or a semi-handle on it, i’ll be a much happier camper.

Just wanted to share with all of you…today is meeting day, so I am allowed to weigh. It’s been 4 weeks now, and I have lost a total of 9 pounds! Thank you Jesus! I haven’t been at this weight for a number of years. It is so awesome to see God work in an area where I myself have been so helpless!

May God bless the rest of you who are struggling with this problem as well!

Brenda M.

The Light Weigh is a wonderful program especially if you continually bounce back and forth with your weight as I did. The most profoundly important part of the program that I found was learning about the spirituality of Saint Therese. Using her sacrifice beads as a means to offer up the little temptations through out the day was the key to my losing over 60 pounds. If you are not familiar with her good deed beads they are a powerful way to transform any struggle into a beautiful offering and means to receive God’s grace. I highly recommend the Light Weigh to anyone. I led the program for over three years in our parish and the most powerful part of our group was that we always ended our meetings by the offering our of sacrifice intentions for the week. That little bite of cake seemed powerless when you knew someones’ mother was lying in a hospital in pain and in need of prayers.
