When I was in Confession I told a priest I would do something- but I did not state it as a promise, and it was not my penance, and even now I have not done it…

Have I sinned grieviously? Even if I’m not so certain that not doing this action would lead to sin in any way?

Just a bit too vague on this one my friend.

My priest let me know in Confession that something was sinful so I said,

“Okay, well I should…”

(I said I would do something)

I have not done that thing. However, by not doing it, I have not sinned due to some sort of negligence (I don’t believe). I’m just wondering if I sinned because I didn’t deliver on a confessional promise, though I did not make it an official promise (I didn’t say “i promise…”) and it wasn’t a penance he proscribed.

I hate to say this but it still doesn’t make any sense. Sorry. It really doesn’t sound like anything happened at all, but that could be that you are hesitant to post what it wa all about. I don’t know. I don’t really understandt exactly what you are trying to convey

Why don’t you do it?

If that’s not possible, how about speaking to the priest about it, not because it’s sinful, but because you need advice.

Sidetrack alert - vocabulary note

The word you want in your last paragraph is PRESCRIBE, which means to advise you to do something.

The word you have used, PROSCRIBE, means to forbid.

As I wrote before my connection had the hickups. As palmas said it seems vague. Only a thing God you and a priest in confession may know. Since this bothers you it may be a sin, talk to a priest. And I wonder about the fact that you are rationalizing wether it was a promise or not. Did the priest believe that you would do what you said you would?

I think you have to go back. " Father last time we discussed …and I said…, Now I realize I should not have said that I did not mean it, nor did I mean to mislead you, and for this I ask forgiveness" …

Ok.
This is it.

I was chilling with this priest in confession.
I say, “Is this a sin Father?”
He says, “Yes”
Awkward Confessional Silence.
Should I say something?
I say, “So I should do this.”
Priest gives a really half hearted little nod or something.

I haven’t done that thing? Now what?

And that thing that I said I’d do… I know that I don’t do it it won’t neccessarily lead me into sin of negligence.

If it’s not something that is stated to be either a penance or a condition of absolution (ie ‘I won’t absolve you if you don’t do xyz …’ or ‘I will absolve you but you must do xyz …’) then no, it’s not a sin if you don’t do it.

But of course if you’ve been given advice by your confessor (and in essence he has advised you, even by agreeing with you in the manner you describe), you should at least attempt to follow it.

It was a suggestion, not a command right? I wouldn’t feel guilty unless you don’t plan on doing it at all.

If that’s the case, next time you chill with the good father (I’m lovin’ it!) mention it. Work out a better solution.

If it’s some sort of restitution or apology, you should probably do it. Especially if it is some sort of restitution, it is required even if he hadn’t agreed you should do it.

If it is something you said you’d do to avoid future sin, well, I guess you really aren’t required to do it as long as you sincerly think you can resist the sin without doing it.

I can’t think of what other category what you said would fall under…

Thanks everyone. I’ll really consider all of this. Bless ya.
