To the question concerning which came first, the Church or the Scriptures? The answer is the Scriptures. The reason being, the Old Testament came first before the church.
This is a semantical “loophole” you’re exposing. The dating of the Church before or after Old Testament Scripture is not in dispute. What’s relevant, and in dispute, is the origin of the church vis-a-vis establishment of the New Covenant (outlined in the New Testament) - in which case, the Church certainly and indisputably came first. To the question concerning which came first, the Church or the Scriptures? This means that technically the OT as ‘we’ know it as a teacher, is not a heritage from the Jews. When was the Old Testament Canon closed? Even during the time of Christ, the Jews did not have a closed canon. The priestly class only accepted the Torah as being divinely revealed. The Pharisees (laypeople) considered the prophetic books also to be divinely revealed. Different groups of Pharisees included different prophetic books as being divinely revealed. What books constituted Scripture did not become important for the Jews until after the destruction of the Temple in 70 A.D., by which time the New Testament Church already existed.
