Think about your death

It is quaint for today’s world where people think about death but they don’t turn to God because of it. Lacking thought about death is not a real problem. People think of death and they can thereon think about reincarnation, ancient pagan idols, contacting the dead or even a self-invented belief about what happens afterwards trying to be as original.as possible. There are people asking to be killed by doctors because they are severely depressed and death looks comforting and soft. Lack of thought about one’s death is not a problem.

Again, Memento Mori is not just about physical death. It is about thinking about your mortality as it relates to your salvation.

In the Middle Ages, death was at the forefront of everyone’s mind. The plague was ravaging Europe. Death was everywhere. Out of this emerges Memento Mori. The focus is salvation. The focus is living the Christian life.

The popularity of reincarnation, suicide, euthanasia, etc demonstrates that people need to be reminded even more about the requirements for salvation.

Thanks Crocus!! šŸ™‚ Now, where is my scull as my coming back gift?

I have a little skull about the size of a golf ball that sits on the window sill in the TV room.
I got it at a Native American festival and the artist carved it out af a deer bone.
My kids wanted me to put it away with the ā€œotherā€ Halloween decs, but I like it.
They know what a memento mori is, because they heard about it in Catholic school.

Ā«for: ā€œAll flesh is like grass, and all its glory like the flower of the field; the grass withers, and the flower wilts; but the word of the Lord remains forever.ā€ This is the word that has been proclaimed to you.Ā»
‭‭1 Peter‬ ‭1:24-25‬ ‭NABRE‬‬

This came to mind. It’s good to remember so that we can endure suffering and live for God, in our short duration on earth as Christians.

we had a catechism drummed into us , and that was from 5 years of age onwards .

One question was ā€œAfter your night prayers what should you do ?ā€

The answer was ā€œOccupy yourself with the thoughts of death .ā€
Sounds like I spent all of my childhood accidentally practicing that devotion. I’m not sure how healthy it was, but it’s nice to know it’s recommended.

So sorry. My bad. (Please Note: This uploaded content is no longer available.)

Remember you are dust, and to dust you shall return.

The words were " 2019 . The year you will die " .
New Year’s Day mass, similar fleeting thought. There is a 102 year old lady in our parish. As an aside, she regularly serves as a capable reader on Sundays. It happened that there was a change in pattern for receiving communion that day (2 days ago). The change resulted in my passing front of that lady; at that moment I thought ā€œI will go before her.ā€

Yesterday, husband noted his age and that I should be thinking about my years ahead as a widow. I half agreed (to myself) then said he should keep up his list of passwords in a readable condition. The contrary half is, none of us knows who or when we go. Maybe I should warn him, while I keep an eye on that lady at church.

St Rose of Lima was told the exact date she would die. She looked forward to it in pious anticipation.

Very important. I am in a situation to think about this.
I am battling an undiagnosed disease carrying more than 8 genetic abnormalities. I do not know what will happen, but it is possible that I will possibly die faster than everyone else. But no matter where my life ends, God is love and His love is enough for me.

Thank you for sharing!

We begin dying the moment we are born. We begin living the moment we are touched by His Hand.

@po18guy, thank you for answering one of my greatest fears… this is really helpful.
That door at the end of our life may say ā€œDEATHā€ on our side - leading many to fear it, but once it is opened, it says ā€œLIFEā€ on the other side. The gap which causes fear is bridged by faith.
This one is amazing. I often think about my death, about that gap between life on earth and life in eternity and it really gives me goosebumps. I don’t feel comfortable while thinking about that. I often think about the way I’m going to die, but I never thought about death as LIFE…

I recently bought a little prayer book with latin prayers and croatian translation (lat. Vigilate et orate). It was edited by Opus Dei here in Zagreb, Croatia. And there is one prayer which I’ll try to translate in english and publish it here, if you all agree. It’s prayer for accepting death and for good death.
