Thinking about being enrolled in the Brown Scapular

Hey everyone,

After seeing a episode where Mother Angelica talks about the Brown Scapular I have been reading more and more about it. I have had a devotion to the Miraculous medal since before I was even Catholic and I feel like I may be called to the Scapular as well. I am afraid I don’t really know much about Carmelite spirituality though and it would seem odd to me to be enrolled not knowing more about it. I have read some Therese of Lisieux but not much else. I am kind of hesitant to ask my priest about it until I learn more about it and can clearly articulate my desire to be enrolled.

Anyone have any experiences with the Brown Scapular or any (name removed by moderator)ut in regards to it?

This is the official statement about the Brown Scapular from the Carmelites.
The following catechesis was prepared in 2000 under the direction of the North American prior provincials of the Carmelite Order and the Order of Discalced Carmelites as the Carmelite Family prepared to celebrate the 750 anniversary of the Brown Scapular. The draft was prepared by Father Sam Anthony Morello, OCD and Father Patrick McMahon, O.Carm. and was then submitted to the Archdiocesan authorities in Washington DC for the imprimatur of the then archbishop, Cardinal James Hickey. After several minor modifications the imprimatur was granted. The following is the revised and approved text. It was published as part of The Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel: Catechesis and Ritual.

The Blue Army Shrine online has a lot of information on the Brown Scapular. I recommend any book by John Haffert and “Garment of Grace”
 
After getting lukewarm and missing Mass, my uncle got back on track and continued to attend Mass after the imposition of the brown scapular.
 
It is a wonderful sacramental.

Asia53 has provided, above, the Carmelites own catechesis about the scapular, which is quite excellent.

You can grow in Carmelite spirituality as the years progress after investiture.

Blessed Elizabeth of the Trinity, a Carmelite, will be canonised by Pope Francis next month, on October 16.

The Carmelite family has waited a long time for this one. I was told, Blessed Elizabeth of the Trinity was about interior conversion. These cases are the hardest to prove.

I was enrolled today by my parish priest. Thankfully he was open to enrolling me and had the rite ready when I arrived. I’m happy to be enrolled and am excited to wear it.
 
I had a question. I have read on some websites that you only need to be enrolled and wear it while other places say you have to pray the little office of mary. Can anyone help me out on what I need to do?

Praying the Little Office of Mary is an old, old requirement. As far as I know, no longer a requirement.

The rosary can be prayed.

Congratulations for your investiture.

One really needs to be careful about reading certain websites that speak of things from the distant past…there were many modifications made in the past 100 years.

Where there is reference to the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin, that had to do with the Sabbatine privilege. This supposed privilege, which emerges from the mists of the Middle Ages, is no longer formulated as it would have been a century and more ago.

Even then, there was the commutation of the Rosary. But this concerned a supposed privilege over and above the wearing of the scapular and being a member of the confraternity.

Today, thanks to the liturgical reform and renewal that emerged from the liturgical movement of the 20th century and that was given impetus in the life of the Universal Church by Vatican II, devotions like the Little Offices have given way to everyone having access to the Liturgy of the Hours in the vernacular…which, of course, was what the Little Offices were modeled on and existed above all for the sake of those who did not know Latin and therefore could not pray the actual Office.

As Asia53 wrote, the best place to begin is with the catechesis done by the Carmelites themselves, who are the custodians of the Brown Scapular devotion. It expresses both the thought of the Carmelites and the thought of the Church today, in the 21st century.
