Thanks for all the info. Another idea that’s is very foreign to me is purgatory. What scripture backs this up? I’m not attacking it I just want to know so I can research it.
Tylim, first off, it probably helps to have a complete understanding of what purgatory really is. Not what you LIKELY heard in Protestant Circles. If you are in purgatory, you will be in heaven, and you are saved. It isn’t a second chance of any type, or second judgement, or anything like that.
Purgatory is where we are purified, for our entry into heaven. Keep in mind Revelation 21:27 says that nothing unclean will enter heaven. Also keep in mind that there is no official church teaching on how “long” someone would even stay in purgatory. In actuality there can’t be, as Purgatory is outside of our world, just like heaven and hell, thus it is outside of time. And purgatory is shown in the Bible 1 Corinthians 3:15, it just isn’t called purgatory. If anyone’s work is burned, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire. I don’t know about you, but I personally don’t ever LIKE enjoying suffering loss.
Read all of 1 Corinthians 3. St Paul is obviously talking about believers. He is talking about people that have Grace, that have build upon the same foundation that St Paul does, Jesus Christ. They are believers, they are all saved. But some of them build upon the foundation with Good Works (works of Gold, Silver and Precious Stones), while others build upon the foundation with bad works (works of wood, hay, and straw). Those who’s works where good immediately received their reward (1 Corinthians 3:14 - If what has been built on the foundation survives, the builder will receive a reward.) But then there is a second group, those that build with bad works (wood, hay, and straw) but we notice that they also are saved, but first they have to suffer loss (their bad works burning up) (1 Corinthains 3:15 - If anyone’s work is burned, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire.)
So one group is saved immediately as all their works survived, another group is saved as well, but not until their bad works are burned up (AKA Purified). That right there, the Catholic Church named purgatory, as we are purified as all the bad is burned up.
