I’ve been thinking about going to a traditional mass that my Archdiocese provides. I know it will be radically different than what I am used to, so is there anything I should read up on/prepare for before?
Thanks!

I asked the same question a while ago, I got some really excellent responses so here is the thread if you want to take a look at it.

I hope you enjoy it!

God Bless HIM AND YOU:thumbsup: 🙂

Sit towards the rear to see what others are doig and use the misselette to follow along.

Let us KNOW how it goes!

Love and prayers,
Pat

i am thinking of doing the same thing , hopefully in the coming weeks. There are a few parishes in my diocese that offer it. A little bit of a drive, but I fell it will be spiritually worth it!👍

*Sit near the back and imitate the congregation for sitting, standing and kneeling

*Missalettes are usually provided for visitors

*Dress modestly & appropriately (some places may prohibit jeans, best to err on the side of a bit dressy vs too casual)

*Some churches may even require head covering for females, and may offer them for those who need them. Signs are usually posted outside the worship space if that is the case.

I looove the Latin mass! Be prepared for a spiritual experience like none other. To me, it is the closest thing to heaven on earth. Tell us please what you thought!

I’m glad I went to a High Mass, the music was very beautiful! I found it hard to follow along, but that is to be expected as this was my first time. 😉

A few questions:

Most of the women wore covering over their heads, what exactly is the reason for that?

It seems that in the new mass, the people in the pews are more “involved” with the responses and singing. Would you agree with this assertion?

Is it typical for the Father to sprinkle everyone with holy water before mass?

I went to the latin mass because I was curious and wanted to experience it. I still like the new Mass I grew up with, and support Vatican II 100%. What do you think the reasons are for the others in attendance? Most of the people there seemed like regulars, yet they were far too young to actually remember the pre-VII Church. Is it just their preference?

If the Church stil provide the old tridentine mass, why exactly do some feel the need to join things like the SSPX?

Thanks all!

I grew up going to the latin mass, never knew what was going on, like it so much better in English, unless one knows Latin why would you not want to understand what is being said.

Learning the Order of Mass in Latin takes like a week. If you give it effort, it’s easier, in my opinion, than understanding Shakespeare’s Elizabethan English.

I just went to my first one. It was completely awesome!! I felt the presence of God like nothing before and felt I had been searching for this my whole life. I can’t believe I waited 6 months or so since RCIA to check it out. I just bought a Roman missal and I’m going next week!

In the 1917 Code of Canon Law, it was a requirement for women to veil their heads in some way, whether with a hat or an actual veil.

I can’t help but fall into autopilot mode when I go to OF masses. I don’t feel any more “participatory” because I make responses. In fact, I feel less so, because I feel like I’m being treated like a child that has to “participate” in everything to “feel included.” That’s how most responses make me feel. With that said, I do like doing the Litany of the Saints.

Do people who can’t speak but are otherwise normal “participate” in OF masses any less just because they can’t make responses? NO! And is it because of some politically correct, “He can do it too!” attitude? NO! It’s because mass participation is firstly and primarily an interior action, and only secondly an outward action. If we had to “make responses” to “participate” in mass, then wouldn’t that mean that praying inside one’s head while, say, driving, isn’t effective? Yes, that’s what that attitude means. Because mass is the supreme prayer of the Church. It seems that some people think that if you don’t shout “AND WITH YOUR SPIRIT” with gusto, then you’re not “participating.” I don’t buy that. Mass is prayer. If you don’t want to make outward responses, fine. They don’t make mass any better in the intrinsic prayerful sense, which is what matters. It feels so gimmicky when people talk about “participation.” Like seriously? Is this middle school field day?

Sprinkling water is called asperges, and it is done on the principal (main) mass on Sundays at high masses and missas cantatas. It is done in the OF as well. The song you heard during this was “Asperges me.”

I think you make a very telling point about the congregation. The popularity of the EF is stronger with the younger generation than it is with the elderly and middle-aged generations, I think. Perhaps this is because older people like steady stuff, I don’t know. I have my own opinion that it is because the older people were lied or given misrepresented opinions in their younger years that “Latin is forbidden” and other ridiculous things like that, and they ate it up and believed it, and still do. But, I don’t know I guess. I am 18 and I love the EF mass. 🤷

I think the reasons for the others in attendance is that they have probably been subject to some improperly celebrated OF masses, which may or may not be the norm for them, and they don’t care for it.

It’s a beautiful tradition, I think I read somewhere that it is a way of giving respect to the Blessed Sacrament and the Heirachy of Angels (If I remember correctly).

It seems that in the new mass, the people in the pews are more “involved” with the responses and singing. Would you agree with this assertion?
Well, of course there are different definitions of ‘involved’. ‘Involved’ as in always doing something, responding to something, or saying something, then yes you would be right. The type of ‘involvement’ that Vatican II actually intended however was to get the laity to be spiritually involved in the Mass, and concentrating more on prayer.

**Yes, on Sundays.
The rite of sprinkling the congregation with holy water before the principal Mass on Sunday, so called from the words intoned at the beginning of the ceremony, taken from Psalm 1, throughout the year except at Easter-tide, when Vidi aquam, from Psalm 117, is intoned. It precedes every other ceremony that may take place before the Mass, such as the blessing of palms or of candles. It is performed by the celebrant priest wearing vestments of the liturgical colour of the day.

I think a person should do and go to whatever Mass they feel best with.

I grew up with the Latin Mass, and doily on my head, and the priest had his back to us and faced the alter, the Mass was longer, and we stood in line and kneeled for communion.

It was a huge Cathedral. To tell you the truth one could not hear well, and I never had any idea what was going on, except when it was time for communion.

I quit going as soon as I graduated, I left dry, my parents never read the Bible and neither did us kids. I always said my prayers and talked to God and knew he was there and asked him for help many times in my life, I knew the 10 commandments well and did my best to follow them, being human didn’t do to well much of the time.

I started reading the Bible,I have 3, the Catholic one, NIV and KJV which is my favorite, and watching Christian TV. It really gave me a new lease on life, I also watch EWTN for last 5 years now and see they encourage reading the Bible which makes me so happy. I am unable to attend church due to health.

I do love the Catholic Church for many things, but can’t agree with everything. I have to credit the other Christian denominations for saving me tho and my renewed love for Jesus.

I started back to Mass years ago and was so happy to have it in English.

I think what ever makes you feel closer to the Father, Jesus and Holy Spirit is going to be different for everyone and everyone will have their own path. I watch Mass on Tv, but also listen to Dr. Charles Stanley and a few others. I’m not sure who or what I am anymore except that I’m a Christian , I have never been to another church except on TV, I think one should go to what ever Mass they want.
