I don’t have a missal…is there somewhere I can buy one?

Do I need to wear a head covering…?

They usually provide the “red book” at the door with a proper handout inserted at the back, so a missal usually won’t be necessary. The EF parish I used to attend provided chapel veils as well, they aren’t fancy, most are old and well worn, but if it’s your preference and you find yourself without, they are there for you!

Enjoy the experience!

Your local Catholic bookstore might have one (mine did), or you could order it directly from Baronius Press or off Ebay. I personally prefer the Angelus Press Missal (bigger Latin print, better layout), but that’s the publishing house of the SSPX, so you might not want to purchase that one.

If you can’t purchase a missal in time, you could just review the Mass at sanctamissa.org, getting used to the general layout and learning some of the public prayers.

I used to worship this way until Vatican II ,so I am not a stranger ,but it has been so long I am not sure how much I will recall…my bil has never been to one, and he wants to go

I like the Baronius Missal; I just bought one. Somehow, I feel the missal must be dignified and durable. There is an edition with Summorum Pontificum printed in front, with the ordinaries and propers in both Latin and English.

I cannot in good conscience support the SSPX, so the Angelus Press missal is, for all its merits, out of the question.

You can always go to a fabric store and buy lace for very little cost- rather than wait for one in the mail- just a thought

you probably already have scarf or hat in your closet you can bring to put on if they do require a headcovering. Most churches that offer TLM or the EF have missals or other worship aids you can borrow. Go by all means, something all Catholics should experience, part of our heritage and hopefully will awaken a desire to continue attending. newsflash: headcovering does not have to be made of lace

newsflash 2, even in the old days, not everyone carried a missal, or understood every word that was said, and they did just fine, completely immersed in the worship and allowing the Holy Spirit do to the understanding for them

I wouldn’t fret over getting a Missal if this is your first time going to the TLM (or the first time in a long time). Truthfully, it’s hard to follow along for the first few times; you’ll spend so much time trying to find your place in the missal that it may not do you any good anyway.

The FSSP and ICRSS chapels in my town each have the red “Ecclesia Dei” loaner-booklets at the front door, yours will probably have something similar. I’ve never gone to a SSPX Mass, so I don’t know if they’ve got loaner missals or not. But again, I’d suggest just following along to the Mass by observing the priest and the rest of the laity, you’ll understand what to do when you see them do it. (Pick a person out who looks like they belong there, then just do whatever they do! 🙂 )

As far as headcovering goes, you’ll probably see women in the congregation who do not have their head covered. I sort of doubt that anyone would say anything to you about it anyway– but if they do, tell them that it’s your first time (or first in a very long time) to a traditional Mass and that you haven’t picked out a good one yet. I suspect they’ll be supportive.
