I’m Catholic, just recently came back Home to the Catholic church, but I’m thinking about visiting a mega-church near where I live. They’re southern baptist I think.

And also, why do so many hispanic people in Mexico leave the Catholic Church to go to those pentecostaol/evangelical churches??? Any ideas?

Why? Is there are reason, or are you just bored?

Peace,

For the same reason, you’re thinking of going?A

Are you sorry you came back home? What do you miss?

I’ll give you one big reason: Ignorance. Unfortunately many adult Catholics never take the time to learn what their own church teaches. Thus when other churches feed them the anti-Catholic garbage they buy it and believe it as facts. You would be surprise how many ex-Catholics come to my door and tell me the most absurd and distorted views about Catholicism. I always set them straight and a lot of them leave with a look of confusion.

Talk about an empty walk of faith into a mega non-denom. Been there, done that, got the t-shirt. Literally. Empty faith yields shallow belief.

I’ve been to those mega-churches (my younger brother is the “music pastor” for one of the largest mega-churches in New England). I think the reason people flock to them is that there is very little religion there (and no talk of sin), but lots of good free entertainment.

Every Sunday is a major production, with rock music, multi-media special effects, dancers, etc (all of whom are professionals on salary from the church). My brother’s church even has an artist who paints a huge religiously-themed mural during the service every week. By the end of the festivities the mural is complete. Very impressive.

I call it Christa-tainment.

Normally a show like that would cost $50 or $60 a ticket, but with the mega-church it is free. Can’t beat that. 😃

Been to one of America’s largest megachurches on a number of ocassions. Has stores, restaurants, and a theater-like church with rock musicians and plays. Fun for a while but it is like going to the multiplex at the mall. Sermons can be good but lack depth. Need to get beyond the basics. Many people burn out after a time.
My foster son worked at one for years and was a member there too. He eventually left.

I recall a lady once telling me that she spent 12 years in Catholic school and went to Sunday school her entire youth but it was at a Protestant church that she learned what the Catholic church really believes. I asked her with all the Catholic education how did she not learn what she then claimed. She looked stumoed then said she had to answer a phone I did not hear ringing.

Hi,
My idea is, what I have that they don’t have is Christ in person in my church.
Your looking for Jesus aren’t you? You will find him only in your catholic church.
Why would anyone look elsewhere when they already have Him ?
That’s what that megachurch is looking for, and you have Him.

“Come to me all you who are labored and are burdened and I will refresh you.”

I agree with Nicea 100%. One thing for which our Church suffers is poor catechises in more than a few parishes. Find fault with whomever you wish. We have many small parishes and missions throughout the world, many of them very poor. It is sometimes very difficult to place an informed instructor in each of them in order to teach the faith properly. Thank God that this is changing drastically, but we still fall short in many areas.

This does not change the fact that the Catholic Church is the one, true Church in which the true presence of Christ subsists. So what are you looking for? Excitement? Emotion? A fiery sermon? If you are looking for Christ, then I would say you should stay home, because He can be found in the Catholic Church in the most profound way possible. Study your faith. Inform your mind and your heart. I will promise you that the deeper you peel away the skin, the more convinced you will be of the authenticity of its claims and the closer you will become to Christ.

Yeah, I think I won’t go…because those mega-churches and even a lot of those pentecostal churches were just a buisness and/or a social club and entertainment…

Obviously I have disagreements with the doctrines and ecclesiology of the Roman Catholic Church, but I have to agree with your co-religionists on this one; a mega-church isn’t the way to go.

It’s hard for young adults, particularly in most Roman Catholic parishes where the fellowship aspect of the Christian Life is often lacking, to meet others who share a devout Christian faith. It can be really, really hard. If you haven’t found a local, solid Newman’s Center then my second recommendation would be an OCF - Orthodox Christian Fellowship. In San Diego they’re also establishing a new Orthodox College - St. Katherine’s, where you may be able to find people your age who are active in their faith.

Many of them are not into studying the faith . They are big on practice of the faith, but that is about it . I imagine if someone of their race is in the evangelical churches they may be able to get them to visit . They get tied up in the singing and the Charismatic part of it . You see many of them are into the Charismatic movement . SO many of them at times join the Charismatic Penticostal churches .

The nondenominational mega-church near me has, of all things, an outdoor paintball range, complete with all sorts of wooden props, like a fake tank, a teepee, and an old Western style fort.

Sorry, but I can’t figure out the Biblical basis of a paintball range. I think the responder who said that these churches tend to be “Christo-tainment” may have hit the nail on the head.

Some Hispanics who had fallen away and came back have testified to their ignorance of the true Church and fell because of the lies and grave misunderstandings of sola scriptorists. We should drag em back to Spain. Yeah the motherland esse’. Whup out the Spanish Inquisition on their asses. No one expects em holmes…

Seriously though, when you are unschooled and you dont know the history of the church as even secular historians would verify, you can be easily led astray by quips they pull out of context in St. Paul’s epistles, the “call no man your Father” nonsense, etc… etc…
It kinda happened to me, but I did my research and I saw how ignorant SS guys really are, and now I kinda get annoyed at protestants because they are just morons for the most part and pull people out of the True Church with their ignorance. This is a perfect case of ‘The blind leading the blind.’ To be honest I dont see how they include the Gospel of St. John in the Bible and still get away with the stuff they do. The acrobatics to get around the plain speaking of the Eucharist and the instituting of confession is just nonsensical.

I loathe that stuff. Its so horribly irreverent and banal. Its like a pagan festival… Clapping and stopping. Gregorian Chant or perhaps polyphony would be like ‘Pearls before swine…’ I suppose. They did this stuff at a Crusio I attended. I heard good things about it. I literaly got sick during it. I got sick again right at the Ultreya and I got the point not to attend this sacrilege.

The best one I ever heard from an ex Catholic was that the Church never even taught her that Christ rose from the dead.

Although their may be some genuine people attending these mega churches, think your right it is a entertainment based event, often looks (the church building inside and out) like a business and does focus on socializing both on Sunday and throughout the week. Regarding the socializing/community aspect of churches I do think the RCC is left lacking - but that’s another thread, but even with this weakness I don’t see it as a reason to attend a mega church, for me at least.

Maybe when you’re strong in your faith you should go. Just to see they’re in the entertainment business serving as a means to distract you away from the work a Christian does on themselves. Enjoying life is a good thing, but those wanting sugar all the time can’t wonder why they get diabetes. This circus atmosphere to attract people is only going to attract the wrong people spending their life avoiding an actual life. The only practical benefit I can see is a disney sense of clean(er) fun as opposed to hooligans cow tipping.

It’s not unlike a college student who doesn’t bother reading textbooks and only came for the fraternity parties on their parents dime. If they graduate, it’s on the bottom of their class, and being there was literally wasting time at great expense watching peers pass them by. The only skill they have to show for lost years was buying test answers, but they’re hollow inside, shallow acquaintances, and have the accomplishment of lying to themselves for sustained years to brag about. I’m sure this isn’t what Christ sacrificed his life over.

Do the work of honing your sense of discernment as Christian, your life does get easier avoiding things you’ll come to understand are only going to make you ill. Sin isn’t enticing when you see how it would result in grievous self harm. Even William Buckley, an intellectual hero to many, came to regret the day he ever lit that first cigarette that led to his suffering with emphysema. Smoking isn’t a legalized sin, however, understanding self harm as sin makes it less of a temptation to struggle about. That’s the spirit behind the catechesis and understanding the ‘why’ behind it makes it easier to navigate shades of gray moral choices.
