Thinking about homeschooling? FYI

There are many Catholic homeschooling conferences coming up. Our Indiana one is next Saturday, May 4.

Our conference coordinator is national Catholic homeschool speaker. She sees a lot of conferences and our Indiana conference gets better every year.

I am volunteering to there that day, so I’ll miss the talks. I am thinking of going to a nearby state’s conference later this summer.

There are Protestant conferences all over, too. I prefer the Catholic ones because the focus is teaching one’s children a Catholic worldview.
 
I would like too, but I have finals coming up that week so I am not sure I will be able to make it.
 
I hope you can make it. It’s on Saturday, so it might be a nice break!

I’m working at the conference, so I’m thinking about going to the Dayton conference in July, but I think the Indpls one will be better.
 
I may check it out depending on how much studying I have done. I would like to check it out since I am new to homeschooling.
 
Leonie, can you tell me how I find out which vendors will be at which conferences? I want to go to one to take a look at materials but when I click on Vendors, it just states that vendors are by invitation only. Thanks.

You’ll have to contact whoever is putting it on. Many of the conferences are now put on by IHM. It’s an offshoot of Seton Home Schooling and they tend to update their vendor list late. Their staff is awesome, but small.

Other conferences like our in Indiana are put on by volunteers–usually harried homeschool moms (and dads), so they may have just not gotten to updating their webpage.

Our webpage is done by a busy homeschool grad who volunteers his time, so when things are updated depends a bit on his schedule. He’ usually gets things up pretty quickly, but sometimes if he’s working on a project for his business, it takes a while.

I would just send an email or call whoever is the coordinator. I’m sure they know most of the vendors all ready. It’s just a matter of getting it up.

I’m so happy with our Indiana vendor list this year. Our biggest vendor–Sacred Heart books–is bringing a bunch of Catholic Heritage Curricula. CHC doesn’t do conferences anymore, so usually you just have to rely on the web description and order on line. Sometimes, they send samples. So. this year, we will have CHC material in addition to Seton, and the Classical/Charlotte Mason material.

I will do that - thanks! I was thinking about attending the national IHM conference in Virginia - but then my daughter (who will be college bound in 2 years) had an offer for college counseling out of town - on the same day - in the opposite direction.

I would love to get my hands on those books, you know? To be able to look through and compare one provider with another.
 
Hey folks. Just moved to the area and am looking for some homeschooling information. We have 4 kids, 2 school age with a 3rd grader and a 1st Grader. We are looking at Seton but have some questions about it. Can anyone answer some questions? Thanks!
 
We have homeschooled all 10 and 3 are in college.

We went through a bunch of curricula and in the end my wife designed her own. We found Seton to be a bit overboard on repetitive work, and fairly inflexible as well as expensive. I have friends using it and their children are doing schoolwork until the end of July. The funny thing is my wife was valedictorian when she attended Seton School from where Seton Home Schooling was developed. No problems with the people running it, or their materials, it just wasn’t for us. In fact I know several of the people running it, they are decent and trustworthy.

Per my better half, the IHM conferences are worth attending just for the used book sale itself. With careful shopping you can get some great bargains.

We did use Mother of Divine Grace for our 3 college age children (now adults). They were a bit more flexible, and offered a regionally accredited high school diploma. This may or may not be important to you. We were fairly happy with their program as well as pricing and flexibility.

Homeschooling should not be as much as a perceived impediment as it used to be. We started 20 years ago. My oldest was accepted to the Merchant Marine Academy (civilian version of the Naval Acadamy). The older next 2 have earned Associate Degrees at local community colleges, and been accepted 2 state universities.

I very strongly urge you to join HSLDA. They cost about $50/ year and will defend you in court as well as aid you if you run into bureaucratic nightmares. Some states are hellish to homeshool in. They are kind of like AAA for homeshooling.

What questions did you have? There are many experienced homeschool parents on this forum that can likely answer your questions. Just let us know 🙂
