Thinking about suicide...

Well, the thing is, I don’t have any close friends. I’m a pretty shy person, and I have a strong fear of social relationships. Some people are afraid spiders or snakes - I’m afraid of making friends. I know the only way to conquer a fear is to face it, but I’m so scared and nervous to do so. Every time I try, I end up crying and going home.

In 8th grade, I had a really close friend for a few months. I was crazy about him. But then one day, he just stopped talking to me, and I’m not sure why. I asked him about it and everything, but he just ignored my questions. So ever since then, I’ve been reluctant to make friends. I don’t want to get hurt again. It took me a couple of years to get over that relationship.

I don’t want to sound selfish or arrogant, and I appologize if I come off that way.

I will take your advice and try helping other people out. I always find that I feel better when I do.
I don’t think I should call a hotline, though. My case isn’t too serious, and I don’t want to bother them with anything miniscule - they have enough to deal with, I’m sure!

Thank you all for your advice! I’ll be praying for you, too.
You deserve help just as much as the other guy who calls the hotline! The counselors can sort out which callers are emergencies and who needs to talk to someone for a while, they are experienced in that. You are not “bothering them” it is what they are there for!! Would the person who has just run out of food for his or her family wait until they are starving to death to seek help? No, as soon as there was no food, the person would pray, turn it over to God, and then contact HELPING AGENCIES!!!

It sounds as if you are suffering from obsessive thoughts more than suicidal tendencies, from what I have experienced. One of the posters was correct, that you shouldn’t focus on these thoughts or they grow in power. Ask Jesus to take those thoughts out of your mind immediately. Say the Hail Mary until you get relief. Has anyone committed suicide in your family or any of your friends? I have heard that relatives of a suicide can be plagued with these obsessive thoughts and fears that they will succumb to the same impulse, even if they are not at all depressed or suicidal. It is a fear that can be hard to overcome.

There is still free or low-cost help available, starting with a priest from your parish or another one nearby. Your priest may also have resources that you and we are unaware of. Please, please do not isolate!!! Your distorted thought patterns then have no opposition at all.

Your deep pain over your friend snubbing you is normal but changing your whole life over that one incident points to low self-esteem. It’s time to learn that you deserve friendships and social experiences and that just because one person had some kind of problem does not mean you are not a worthwhile person. God doesn’t want you to live your life in paralyzing fear of knowing others!

I will pray for you too. Have courage! God did not create in us a spirit of fear, but one of courage!

Thank you all for your prayers. I’ve decided to go on a little more medication, and I’ll probably go to my school counselor on Monday. Thanks again!

Memorare (Prayer to Our Lady)
Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to your protection, implored your help, or sought your intercession, was left unaided.
Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto you, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother. To you do I come, before you I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in your mercy, hear and answer me. Amen

Please get some professional help from your doctor or find someone who can give you some good couselling.

I am praying for you …
