Hello, I’m 20 and in college thinking about becoming a police officer. I’m wondering what I should know about it from a Catholic standpoint. For example I heard many are freemasons. Is this true?

Any responce would be appreciated!

freemasons? Really? I’ve never heard that one before 😛

I think being a police officer is a very noble vocation. God bless you in your endeavors!

I’m not sure how many police officers are masons, but I know alot of them are Knights Of Columbus!🙂

Yes, it is indeed noble to be a police officer, as you are always giving to others and helping others. Just bring your Catholic morality with you and you will be fine. And if you do meet masons on the force, than it could be your chance to evangelise and enlighten them, especially if they are Catholic. No matter what field you choose, you are going to meet masons and other people that are different than you, so you are just going to have to deal with it…

Served for almost ten years as a police officer. The problem you mentioned never arose during my work for four different organizations. The problem today is that due to the economic downturn, many cities are laying off or freezing employment. In the mean time, get your degree and if it does not open up, consider going into the military and get experience as a military police officer. I know of a young man that did this and he is now a dog handler in the police dog program, which will reap great opportunities when he gets out.

God Bless:thumbsup:

what’s a military police officer?

The different branches of the US Military have there own police. They cover the Military bases and surrounding areas. I know a lot of people had an easy time getting into a career as a civilian police having experience in the Military.

Well put. Noticed your SFO…I have been professed since 94. Tomorrow there is a funeral in our diocese for a late vocation priest…Fr. Jerry Northrup SFO (RIP.) Some folks don’t realize that a parish priest can be a secular franciscan.

I have been to two funerals in our fraternity within the last 1/2 year. I will pray for your Priest.

You are right, you can be a Priest and be a Secular Franciscan. My fraternity has someone who was professed and then later was called to being a Priest and is currently in seminary. We also have someone discerning for the Deaconate. Hmmmm, that one would be myself:D. Pray for me that Gods will be done with me.

Peace,

Mike

I have been a police officer for 23 years and, while there are many who are Masons, it has never been an issue.
