Is it a sin to think morbid thoughts, killing yourself or someone else, thinking up made up sad stories eg. A flood came and everyone in your house drowned and your the only one alive, you make it to the roof and are left all alone.

What about negative thoughts.
I’m worthless, no point in living etc…

And sick thoughts Girl on girl action etc.

If so why? the thoughts arn’t harming anyone, sure it may be a bit disturbing but why would it be any of Gods concern?

The first part1)Are you wanting to kill yourself or others?2)Is this a daydream or a thought for a story plot?Or perhaps a fear of losing everyone you love?3)Are you depressed?4)Are you entertaining the lustful thoughts? How would you feel if one of your friends said they entertain those those about your mom? Finally, before you commit a mortal sin you have to think about it first and everything we do think or say is Gods business,He is our Creator we are His creatures we belong to Him and He has every right to tell us how to or not to think and act.He does this for our good.God Bless

Actually, I often struggle with these very issues myself. Part of what makes it difficult to post a reply to this thread is having to take a good hard look in the mirror.

Thoughts to matter to God. The words of the Penitential Rite during the Mass come to mind (I confess to Almighty God and to you my brothers and sister that I have sinned through my own fault, in my thoughts and in my words, {words bolded by me to make them stand out} in what I have done and in what I have failed to do and I ask blessed Mary ever virgin, all the angels and saints, and you my brothers and sisters to pray for me to the Lord our God).

Also, in Matthew 22: 36-39 The Bible says :

36 "Teacher, what is the most important commandment in the Law? 37 Jesus answered: Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul and mind. 38 This is the first and most important commandment. 39 The second most important commandment is like this one and it is, “Love others as much as you love yourself”.

If you do not love yourself, or infact hate yourself, how can you really love others? Also these verses mention loving the Lord with your heart soul and mind. (I bolded this myself for emphasis)

There are other sources that point to how important thoughts are to God, especially since thoughts are often a first step toward action.

Excellent response ThornGenX:) I thought of an example specifically dealing with sexual sin that the Late Archbishop Fulton J.Sheen gave that was brilliant. He had his black board and was talking about entertaining impure desires and the mind gets a stimulating response, then he started knocking lightly on the blackboard and he said for a few minutes that will distract you and then it will blend in and you will no longer respond like when I first started as with just entertaining the thought to get your attention again I will have to knock louder,so it is with sin in order to get the same response you have to increase the stimuli.Anyway I thought it was an brilliant example of the nature of sin.

Bear in mind that the origin of the thought could very well be from outside your own mind, from whatever little imp the devil has assigned to torment you.

When thoughts like that come into my head, I at once say (out loud, if no one else is around), “That’s not my thought,” and go about my business. Surprising how well that works.

That’s a great suggestion. I also like to ask Our Lady each time to help me maintain a pure and undivided heart and mind.👍

That’s a good example. This verse also came to mind, but I could not find where it was in the Bible.:o

Matthew 5: 27-28

27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Do not commit adultery.’ 28 But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

I know this phrase was intended for heterosexual situations, but I think it applies even more so with homosexual desires since same sex attractions are wrong under all circumstances. I say this as one repenting of sins of this nature with the Grace of God.:gopray:

Having bad thoughts, in itself, is not sinful. As Dave said, sometimes the devil puts those thoughts there, but God gave us free will and it’s our decision what to do with them. Contrary to what society says, we CAN choose everything we think about (aside from dreams which are involuntary) and not let the media decide for us. We should be meditating on good and holy things and shoving out anything that could be unholy, because good and evil cannot coexist.

Could thinking these things possibly be a mortal sin?

:banghead: Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

Darn! These thoughts are soooooooo hard to get rid of as well! even worse I have noooooooo interest in sex or lesbian behavior but I still get the thoughts!
…and the temptations…

And suicidal thoughts gosh don’t get me started on those!
And the negative thoughts on my self! I get those 24/7 gee I’m damned arn’t i?

When I get angry with others, those thoughts of murder come in!

But don’t worry there is no way i’m ever going to act on them! I would never want to kill anybody… Id rather suicide!
And even then with the suicidal thoughts I still won’t act on them cause I don’t want to offend god like that!

I did suffer from Depression and I still do but my depression is no where near as bad as it used to be.

Okay you said a mouthful that tells me one,you are not entertaining these thoughts ,you are being tormented by the enemy, and perhaps suffering from depression. The enemy will attack you with vile thoughts hoping you will entertain them(enjoy them not try to get rid of them)You sound like you do not want these thoughts,no you aren’t doomed.

thank goodness…

do I still need to confess them at a confessional though?

No you are not willing these thoughts, but you can mention the struggle you are having and ask the Priest how to fight the enemys tactics:)

Dear friends

Nasty nasty trick of satan…he is so laughable. Not only does he place these stupid thoughts into people’s minds but then he attempts to convince them it is part of them and in some way their hearts desire. Sometimes satan finds a great subject who will entertain and dwell upon these thoughts until they either act on them or despair under the awfullness and weight of them. Satan uses this tactic with souls that he cannot get to go off and commit murder or to steal from a shop etc, he attempts to pervade their thoughts and depress them there with evil. Satan hates you (he hates all people especially those who give their lives to Christ Jesus and the Truine God) and he’ll do anything to ruin your soul, deter you in faith and torment you in mind body and spirit so that we may admit defeat. He’s always uping the anti and the closer a person comes to God, he ups the anti.

The original poster doesn’t want to think these things, they are not this persons hearts desire for their life and for others. It’s easy to get sucked into dwelling on them. Considering the sinfullness of them, if there is something worng within the person and considering all manner of things. Satan loves to mess with people’s psychology convincing them they are totally broken and easy play for such things. Convincing people that there is no hope eventually and hoping that they don’t turn to Christ Jesus and tell Him all about it and ask for protection from all evil spirits. If a soul does that satan is finished in tempting that soul with that particular thought, Jesus will crush him in that respect.

When these thoughts come ask Jesus to bind all evil spirits from you and then confide in Him the misery it has caused you and tell Him every detail of it. Bless yourself with Holy Water and sprinkle a few drops in the room you are in also. Then laugh in the face of satan, he’s such a miserable and disgusting piece of work that he doesn’t even deserve to see your upset, fear or misery that he may have caused you, he’d take much delight in seeing all of that. Laugh at him, he hates to be laughed at, he has no victory, he knows he’s finished and can only go for damamge limitation by taking other souls with him to his demise. Don’t be one of them, don’t ever engage in conversation with satan, he isn’t worth one word of your speech or thoughts and then laugh at satan and run to Jesus.

I will keep you in my prayers

God BLess you and much love and peace to you

Teresa

Where do i get holy water from? do I just get water from a tap and ask god to bless it or something?

Evanescence

You can get Holy Water the next time you go to Mass. Take a clean container, or stop and get a bottle at your local religious goods store. Generally it’s free.

Good luck, I used to suffer from the same problems you listed, and thanks to fleeing to our Holy Mother when the thoughts came, now I’ve been free of those kinds of thoughts for a while now.

Just pray.

(Also, my priest once suggested that I wear a rubber band on my wrist, and give myself a good pop when those thoughts occurred. I know it sounds silly, but it did help.)

Go to your Catholic church with a bottle for Holy Water. Call first, your parish may provide the bottles. Your priest will bless your water for you.
