Thinking sick or morbid thoughts?

Random thoughts are not sinful. Dwelling on them and letting them get out of hand can be very sinful. When tired or bored people will often day dream, that is a natural phenonmenon.

We often can not control what thoughts come to mind. IF we see something (or someone) tempting we can not control the random thoughts that pops into our heads however we do NOT have to continue entertaining these thoughts.

A sermon I once heard, said that these thoughts are from Satan, it is another lie that he puts out there as a suggestion. The lie is that we can somehow live out our wildest fantasys. The Truth is that, even IF we could have these desires fulfilled, we would be doing serious damage to our souls. Sin by its very nature is attractive. Intellectually and spiritually we know it is wrong to give into sin.

The fantasys are frivolous illusions, we need to cast them out for what they are. They are traps that can lead into big time trouble. So to dwell on them will make us more vulnerable to temptations.

IF we imagine ourselves always giving into our baser instincts, when the opportunity comes to live out a fantasy, we will be more likely to give into that sin. BUT if we can always reject these fantasys outright, we will be much better prepared to reject sin if the occasion comes up.

PLUS if we are always fantasizing about sin, we may even get to the point where we go out of our way to invite such situations.

There are many wonderful thing to day dream about, Heaven, Christ, prayer, our family, sports, … we know the things that can get us into trouble, and we know there are many things that will keep us out of trouble.

Christ’s Peace

BTW if you are preoccupied with suicidal thoughts, you may need professional help. Do not hestitate to seek it out. Random thoughts are normal, dwelling on them indicates a very serious problem.

Get a Miraculous Medal, have it blessed, and wear it always and say the prayer whenever these thoughts or dreams bother you.

I went to the priest today about the thoughts, It didn’t work out though 😦 I don’t think I want to see my priest for spiritual advice anymore…
He was half wondering why I am asking him for spiritual advice and he admitted that he can’t help much.
He just told me to do things I enjoy like music (lol I just end up writing depressing songs)
Duh My counsellor already suggested that! to do my hobbies to get my mind off the thoughts.

He also suggested to seek god’s guidance, Iva=e already done that also!

Gee I really benefitted from that appointment did I? Lol ohh well… I’m sick to death of counsellors so I’m not going to bother anymore.

(my priest is scary anyways!)

There is NO WAY i’m going near my priest again! 😦 scary!

Well I tried the idea of seeing the preist about the thoughts can anyone suggest anything to help with the thoughts.
(Also, my priest once suggested that I wear a rubber band on my wrist, and give myself a good pop when those thoughts occurred. I know it sounds silly, but it did help.)
LOL thats what my school counsellor suggested! gosh no good though, when these thoughts come to mind I end up getting lost in them and it takes a while for me to “wake up” and to stop thinking them. (I usually “wake up” when my conscience gives me a little “prick” or something and I come aware of reality)

I have seen proffesional counsellors about this but they weren’t much help. I don’t get them as much as I used to but I still get them at least a couple of times a day when they used to be constant. Trust me i am sick to death of counsellors and I don’t ever want to see a counsellor again!

And also What is a “Miraculoua Medal”? and where can I get them from?

(I don’t want to go near my priest for a while so I don’t think I can get it blessed)

Is it a sin to think morbid thoughts, killing yourself or someone else, thinking up made up sad stories eg. A flood came and everyone in your house drowned and your the only one alive, you make it to the roof and are left all alone.

What about negative thoughts.
I’m worthless, no point in living etc…

And sick thoughts Girl on girl action etc.

If so why? the thoughts arn’t harming anyone, sure it may be a bit disturbing but why would it be any of Gods concern?

Evanescence
Hi.

There are two kinds of sick and morbid thoughts – those which “bounce off philosophical walls,” as you test your internal personal reaction to evil.

And then there are those which are the product of the influence of a perverse spirit which has attached itself to you, usually on account of habitual sin.

Scott Peck describes such a person in People of the Lie.

My personal advice is pray, pray, pray. Go to confession and make a very, very thorough general confession. And go to Communion, daily, if possible.

The perverse thoughts will stop, and you will become what God wants you to be – a builder, and a joy to the people around you.

Cute.

I say what I say because your question *seems *to describe what is referred to as “demonic obsession.” It is regarded as a very minor, “chase-away-able” form of demonic possession. Making use of the sacraments typically eliminates the problem. You make yourself intolerable to the spirit impacting your thoughts.

The Miraculous Medal was given to St. Catherine Loubre sometime in the 1800’s by Our Lady. I won’t give you the whole story, but what Mary said was to have medals struck in a particular image. She said great blessings or graces or whatnot to those who wear them, especially around the neck. She told the Church, who saw nothing wrong with them, and miracle reports started flooding in. I heard of a skeptic priest who saw a Miraculous Medal save a boy from his coma and repair the unrepairable brain damage. I got mine at my local Catholic store for 75 cents. What, may I ask, is so scary about the priest? Priests aren’t scary…they’re just old men…can’t possibly do anything to you. Except pray for you to burn in Hell. God loves priests best:p.

You should also go to Church every Sunday and Holy Days of Obligation. If you find it boring, pick up Scott Hahn’s The Lamb’s Supper, Quite the read.

??? :ehh: I don’t understand what you mean there…

It’s not a sin if you don’t entertain the thoughts. I mean, if they just randomly come in but you pay them no heed.

As one who suffers from OCD what you describe, unwanted, frustrating thoughts about sex and violence and things you don’t want to think about (but thinking about not wanting to think about them…means you are thinking about them…arrrrg!) could very well be obsessions.

I found my anti-depressant has helped a little with them. But not completely.

Yes, demons do sometimes inspire us with bad thoughts. Pray to your guardian angel to guard your soul from such demonic inspirations, and frequent the sacraments, pray, use sacramentals, etc.

And just a term I would like to throw out into the discussion, since I didn’t see anyone use it and I was sure I would, seeing as its a very Catholic board, and the term is a quaintish, Catholicesque term:

MORBID DELECTATION!!!

Dun, dun, duuuuuuun!!!

It means dwelling on the gruesome and grotesque and taking some sort of sick pleasure or satisfaction from it.

In this kind of instance, Archbishop Sheen suggested helping others with works of charity. If you’re busy helping others, you will feel better about yourself. you will feel that your life has meaning… because it has. Devote yourself to this, and your thoughts will be focused on others, not yourself.

And if you pray as well, your thoughts will be turned to God.

Work and prayer are the key to a balanced, blessed life.

And if you pray as well, your thoughts will be turned to God.
Trust me I’ve tried praying and even during prayer the thoughts won’t stop, it is SOOOOOOO ANNOYING!!! i can’t even pray without these thoughts and yes my thoughts turn to god, but they are not very good thoughts when I pray i get thoughts like “god kill me!” “god I hate you!” (its not true though) “he’s not listening, he hates you” THESE THOUGHTS DRIVE ME NUTS!!!

and they are embarrasing cause I am in the middle of trying to socialise with god…
and my conscience kills me for it as i die of guilt!
ARRRRRRRRRRRR :crying: darn these thoughts they are out of control!

fading away, soon to be consumed by my fears and my inner lie

I used to have those kind of thoughts when I was around 17. Actually I was quite disturbed because I would have lesbian dreams - even though I had no homosexual desires normally. It was frustrating because you cannot control your dreams!
Also I would have thoughts about violence, both against myself and others. I suffer from depression and anxiety. For me a combination of medication and therapy has helped. Everyone is different however but I will say this. It is VERY important to tell someone how you are feeling. Bottling it up makes it worse - believe me.
Don’t worry about having those thoughts when you are praying. It is more common than you think! I seem to be plagued by lustful thoughts during Mass. How inappropriate!
These thoughts will lessen but you need to keep taking positive steps.

Firstly, keep praying despite the thoughts. Just keep repeating the same prayer if you need to - find a picture or a statue of Our Lady and focus on her - ask for her help.
Secondly, don’t let your fear of a priest stop you from going to church. Just remember that he is representing Jesus - try to ignore the man he is and just go to participate in the Mass.
Thirdly, go to confession. If you need to stay behind the screen so the priest can’t see you.
Fourth, read up about the lives of the saints. Try and find parts of their lives that are inspirational to you. It can be a good distraction.

I will pray for you - please pray for me also. I still struggle also - especially trying to find a useful therapist! (there are many dud ones out there).

Evanescence: You might find “The Jesus Prayer” useful.

‘The continuous interior Prayer of Jesus is a constant uninterrupted calling upon the divine Name of Jesus with the lips, in the spirit, in the heart; while forming a mental picture of His constant presence, and imploring His grace, during every occupation, at all times, in all places’. I learned it as “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.”

I’m quoting from this link which discusses it in detail:
landru.i-link-2.net/shnyves/Prayer_without_Ceasing.html

The Catechism recommds this prayer (CCC 2667).

2667 This simple invocation of faith developed in the tradition of prayer under many forms in East and West. The most usual formulation, transmitted by the spiritual writers of the Sinai, Syria, and Mt. Athos, is the invocation, “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on us sinners.” It combines the Christological hymn of Philippians 2:6-11 with the cry of the publican [Lk 18:9-14] and the blind men begging for light.[Matt. 9:27] By it the heart is opened to human wretchedness and the Savior’s mercy.
2668 The invocation of the holy name of Jesus is the simplest way of praying always. When the holy name is repeated often by a humbly attentive heart, the prayer is not lost by heaping up empty phrases, but holds fast to the word and “brings forth fruit with patience.” This prayer is possible “at all times” because it is not one occupation among others but the only occupation: that of loving God, which animates and transfigures every action in Christ Jesus."

And Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton said:

*“We must pray literally without ceasing - without ceasing; in every occurrence and employment of our lives. You know I mean that prayer of the heart which is independent of place or situation, or which is, rather, a habit of lifting up the heart to God, as in a constant communication with Him.” *

There’s a whole book on this called “The Way of a Pilgrim” which you can pick up, but the link above should have enough info to start.

It sounds like you need drugs and treatment. However, I believe this prayer would help you. Please try it.

You mentioned you’d seen a counselor . . . do you have OCD? (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder)

I think I have a touch of it-- I have to check the stove twice everytime I leave the house. And I used to be bothered by nasty thoughts during mass.
My prayer:“Lord, please cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of Thy Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love Thee and worthily magnify Thy holy name, through Christ our Lord.”

If you pray that or the Jesus prayer every time you are bothered, eventually the thoughts will stop.

I think you meant to say that that " they pray that you DO NOT burn in Hell" (at least I hope that’s what you meant).😃
