can someone help me? i had always thought that sunday was a day of rest, and that no work should be done on that day. i attend mass every sunday and do a good amount of reading and pray the rosary and divine mercy chaplet at 3 oclock. if i wanted to catch up on some yard work that i could not get done the rest of the week, would that be a sin?

not sure, good question though! my priest explained it to me this way. on sundays. we are to do no manual labor at all. we aren’t even to paint a wall. so the answer basically is no, no yard work. we are not allowed to earn money either on sunday as that is work. but, for those who have to such as emergency personel, that is different because it is saves lives, and we need emerigency personel. that is the only exception noted.

True, but then the emergency personnel need gasoline and perhaps food as well. And they need gasoline and other things to get to that. So it’s a chain event and pretty soon everyone in the economy is involved. What did Jesus answer when He was asked about working on the Sabbath?

umm, iam kind of embarassed to admit this, but your going to have to tell me… the old memory isn’t what it used to be…😃

Hello my friend,

I could just tell you what I think but that is how error is passed around. Here are some bible verses to help you in your study. The fact that you are asking this question to begin with instead of ignoring it is evidence that your heart is sensitive to the Holy Spirit and that’s good 😉

Ex 20:8 "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.

9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work,

10 but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates.

11 For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.

I could stop there because that seems pretty plain, however using just one verse to nail down doctrine and understanding is dangerous business. So here are a few more:

Ex 16:23 And he said unto them, This is that which the LORD hath said, To morrow is the rest of the holy sabbath unto the LORD: bake that which ye will bake to day, and seethe that ye will seethe; and that which remaineth over lay up for you to be kept until the morning.
Ex 16:25 And Moses said, Eat that to day; for to day is a sabbath unto the LORD: to day ye shall not find it in the field.
Ex 16:26 Six days ye shall gather it; but on the seventh day, which is the sabbath, in it there shall be none.
Ex 16:29 See, for that the LORD hath given you the sabbath, therefore he giveth you on the sixth day the bread of two days; abide ye every man in his place, let no man go out of his place on the seventh day.

If you can remember, God gave the Israelites manna from heaven for 40 years after the exile from Egypt. On the sixth day, God commanded that they gather manna enough for that day and the sabbath day. They were not to gather manna on the Sabbath day.

Ex 35:3 Ye shall kindle no fire throughout your habitations upon the sabbath day.

The Israelites were not even supposed to make a fire (this inlcuded gathering wood).

But there is a balance. We shouldn’t be legalistic. Christ harvested food from a field to eat on the Sabbath. Does this mean we can do yardwork and such? To answer that question you should ask yourself this… Is there a difference between picking grain to eat because you have no food and mowing the grass because you don’t have time to do it any other day?

Lu 6:1 And it came to pass on the second sabbath after the first, that he went through the corn fields; and his disciples plucked the ears of corn, and did eat, rubbing them in their hands.
Lu 6:2 And certain of the Pharisees said unto them, Why do ye that which is not lawful to do on the sabbath days?
Lu 6:5 And he said unto them, That the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.

Lu 13:14 And the ruler of the synagogue answered with indignation, because that Jesus had healed on the sabbath day

Here is where Jesus healed on the Sabbath and the jews got angry. Jesus rebukes them and calls them hypocrites. Why? Becuase it is ok to do good on the Sabbath. What kind of good you should be asking, (lest we use that as an excuse to do other things we consider good)?
  1. Giving someone medical attention
  2. Gathering food if you hungry, (though you should be laying up your meals before on the sixth day if at all possible).
What about changing a flat tire on the Sabbath?

Lu 14:3 And Jesus answering spake unto the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath day?
Lu 14:5 And answered them, saying, Which of you shall have an *** or an ox fallen into a pit, and will not straightway pull him out on the sabbath day?

Jesus illistrates here that sometimes we do have emergencies. If it is something unexpected that we could not have dealt with any other time and that thing must be done right then (like changing a tire when your stranded) then by all means.

The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.

That is just a drop in the bucket. I encourage you to explore further these things I mentioned. And when studying, listen to no one who does not give you the word of God to consider. This is how we stay safe from error.

Mt 24:4 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you.
Mt 24:5 For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.
Mt 24:11 And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many.
Mt 24:24 For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.
Mr 13:5 And Jesus answering them began to say, Take heed lest any man deceive you:

The only way we can stay safe from deception and know when there is a false prophet or Christ is to know God’s word.

God Bless!

something I left out…

The Sabbath is your day to get away from laborious tasks. It is special time between you and God. We should all look forward to each Sabbath and consider our free time a blessing. The bible says it is a sign between you and Him to the rest of the world that you are a Christian. Devote yourself to God on that day (and family) and watch how God blesses your life!

CCC 2184 Just as God “rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had done,” human life has a rhythm of work and rest. The institution of the Lord’s Day helps everyone enjoy adequate rest and leisure to cultivate their familial, cultural, social, and religious lives.

CCC 2185 On Sundays and other holy days of obligation, the faithful are to refrain from engaging in work or activities that hinder the worship owed to God, the joy proper to the Lord’s Day, the performance of the works of mercy, and the appropriate relaxation of mind and body. Family needs or important social service can legitimately excuse from the obligation of Sunday rest. The faithful should see to it that legitimate excuses do not lead to habits prejudicial to religion, family life, and health.

CCC 2186 Those Christians who have leisure should be mindful of their brethren who have the same needs and the same rights, yet cannot rest from work because of poverty and misery. Sunday is traditionally consecrated by Christian piety to good works and humble service of the sick, the infirm, and the elderly. Christians will also sanctify Sunday by devoting time and care to their families and relatives, often difficult to do on other days of the week. Sunday is a time for reflection, silence, cultivation of the mind, and meditation which furthers the growth of the Christian interior life.

CCC 2187 Sanctifying Sundays and holy days requires a common effort. Every Christian should avoid making unnecessary demands on others that would hinder them from observing the Lord’s Day. Traditional activities (sport, restaurants, etc.), and social necessities (public services, etc.), require some people to work on Sundays, but everyone should still take care to set aside sufficient time for leisure. With temperance and charity the faithful will see to it that they avoid the excesses and violence sometimes associated with popular leisure activities. In spite of economic constraints, public authorities should ensure citizens a time intended for rest and divine worship. Employers have a similar obligation toward their employees.

CCC 2188 In respecting religious liberty and the common good of all, Christians should seek recognition of Sundays and the Church’s holy days as legal holidays. They have to give everyone a public example of prayer, respect, and joy and defend their traditions as a precious contribution to the spiritual life of society. If a country’s legislation or other reasons require work on Sunday, the day should nevertheless be lived as the day of our deliverance which lets us share in this “festal gathering,” this “assembly of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven.”
