Hello!

I have a question for OCDS and SFO folks here. Can you sum up your charism and the focus area of your spiritual development, and possibly PM me with resources in my area?

I have always been attracted to both orders and am not sure which to choose. The web is so full of information that I’m looking for simplified information (a quick compare and contrast), and then, perhaps websites with contact information in the future (for my region, of course).

There is a website that compares and contrasts the differences between religious orders (including the Carmelites and Franciscans). However, it does not touch on Third Order/Oblates. Nonetheless, it still may be of help to you;

  • Miserissima,
The post after yours has great information on the differences as well as perhaps looking at some of the vocation websites listed
One fantastic one [in my opinion is]

The best suggestion was given below… pray pray pray and visit different communities.

Each founder had a different ministry and way of life…

My personal search led me to the Franciscans as I found the “Franciscan Spirituality” matched my temperament more than Carmelites or Benedictines. ***:nun1:

Hello, Marie,

I don’t know if this is the book you are referring to, but there is one called The Divine Office for Dodos: A Step-by-Step Guide to Praying the Liturgy of the Hours by Madeline Pecora Nugent. It is available at several online book shops; don’t forget to check your local bookstore or your local library. If your local library does not have a copy they can get one via interlibrary loan – just ask them.

Hope this helps!

p.s. Dodos is not a misspelling, but stands for Devout, Obedient Disciples of Our Savior. 🙂

Web sites can be very helpful, but more important than that is to reflect on your own gifts and the charisms of the orders. As a Secular Franciscan, I met a married couple where the husband was a Secular Franciscan and the wife a Lay Carmelite. The Franciscan charism for me was working with the poor and sick and the elderly.

As a Carmelite I can say that the website is a bit off on the Carmelites.

This has been pointed out earlier in a thread that brought up this website.

There is theory and there’s the way theory is put into practice. Books and internet will give us one idea but go along to a few different groups and see if you like what you find.

I am a Franciscan Tertiary. My branch of the Order is a strict one which I needed. The SFO seems to vary from place to place and, unfortunately, there is corruption that has entered into some fraternities and they are not faithful to all the teachings of the Church.

As to which spirituality to embrace, follow your heart! You will find yourself more drawn to Carmelite or Franciscan or Dominican saints for example.

Some Third Orders have shorter or longer formation periods. Some ask almost nothing of you and others ask a great deal. If you are looking for a Third Order community, you should visit the ones near you. I think you will see where there is a fit.

Ave Maria!

What exactly are you being confused about with the Liturgy of the Hours?

Hi everybody in this site and forum, I’m new and trying to grasp how it all functions 🙂

O Miserissima! I understand your feelings, I had the same doubts and I’m still having them, but I “clearly” understand what my heart wants… So maybe can I be of any “help” for you?

A vocation is only from God, but when it is unclear, we need to decipher it and that’s no easy… I can share my experience in situation like yours.

Secular Franciscans are extremely “joyful” people (at least in Latvia 🙂 ) If you can’t live without daily silent (interior) prayer (of about 1 hour) and if you have big need for silence and solitude, then I would suggest Secular Carmelites. The main requirement to be a Carmelite is daily interior prayer of 1/2 hour. If you feel big necessity for it, then that might be your vocation.

As to Secular Franciscans, I’ve got a feeling that they have a different temperament – down-to-earth and extrovert – willing to communicate in any situation :). They are usually not worried about the degree of recollection when they pray, they JUST pray, and it can be several Rosaries a day without a least attempt to concentrate – they are sure that God has heard their prayer. I think that Secular Franciscans are also mainly married people.

I have had trouble to get in to an order because I am to old. But that didn’t stop our Lord from calling us. Now if men over 50 become a third order and take vows then live in community and call it a semi cloister, can they wear a habit. they would live on there own money. We would do and act just as a real cloister, monastery, or abbey. What do you think?
