Third orders new names

Are you allowed to take a new name like friars, sisters, and priests do when you join a third order? Also are you technically considered a brother and sister? I’m specifically discerning Franciscans and Dominicans so answers specified to those two would be appreciated

Nope.

Keep in mind that not all vowed members of religious orders take new names. In the US as of now, the majority simply keep their baptismal names.

Somewhere in the process, we had the ceremony and before ending, we each stood and said, “I am known as X in the world, but I would like to be known as Sr. X of ABC”. I took Maria Anthony of the Soul of Christ Abandoned and the Holy Face. That was in the 1980s.
