I can’t really explain this, I’m thirsting for something more. I just have the urge to read the Bible, pray the Rosary, pray the chaplet of Divine Mercy…I don’t know I’m just seeking something deeper if that makes sense?

Have you already set yourself up on a prayer schedule, yes, I mean a discipline?

You mention fasting in another thread…

Talk to us about your prayer life…

I think you may be discerning priesthood (You may have already mentioned that in the past and I just don’t have time to read all your posts, etc )

no, no set prayer schedule. I usually just pray when I think I should or feel like it. It’s kinda weak actually. I usually don’t feel like praying during the day, just at night. It’s hard for me with all the distractions of life to sit and say the Rosary or something.

One of the reasons I’m not praying as much is because I’m dry. I know that sounds selfish that just because I’m not benefiting, I’m not doing it, but it’s what’s happening right now.

I figure if I fasted and started praying a little more it could move me through my dryness. I sat in front of the Holy Body in the chapel the other morning and prayed about this. I guess it was the Spirit talking, but I just decided that I needed to start learning how to fast.

I don’t really want to think about my vocation, whatever it may be. This is a stressful time for me since I just started college and moved all the way across the country and left my family and friends!!

I know the feeling. I think it will always get “deeper” if you seek it. We have a rich tradition and faith. The mysteries of the Trinity and the cross are endless. How wonderful of a way to occupy the mind and soul. Don’t pass over a thing, practice what you learn first and more will be revealed. I’m forgetful, having the same revealing moments over and over, but that is what sin does. It clouds the mind and spirit. You could spend the rest of your life on one thing if you chose and perfect your understanding of it. I love John 1:1 and go back to it often. Imagine how deeply we can understand that chapter, then imagine , per St. Faustina, we will marvel at the mystery of the Trinity in heaven for a million years and only scrap the surface. Tim

Might I suggest that you try to make a prayer schedule? It has helped me. Yes, keep in mind your busy life (God knows that I understand that…look at my profile) but really, I think you may be looking for some discipline here. A habit takes about 21 days to make, so …

It absolute makes sense. 🙂 You are experiencing the soul’s longing for God, not just the things of God. St. John of the Cross speaks to this:
The soul always possesses this desire to have clear and pure understanding of the divine truths, and the grater her love, the more she longs to enter further into these truths. The Spiritual Canticle, Stz. 36 #9
St. Augustine’s famous line applies: “Thou hast made us for thyself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they find their rest in thee…”

It makes a lot of sense. I had the same feelings for many years. It wasn’t until I began to attend Mass and receive the Eucharist during the week (because of my work schedule I can only get there on Tues and Thurs) that I noticed that this hunger abaited.

Give it a try.

I would say daily Mass if you can get there. Also, try doing some spiritual reading if you have time. Read things written by Saints, they are proven to have the words of eternal life 🙂

As a freshman in college, you have a lot to adjust to, and a lot to look forward to. Do not overload yourself or create any unnecessary burden God does not want you to. So I agree with you not to think about your vocation whatever it may be. Just concentrate on your school work and open yourself to make many new friends. At the same time, know that God is the one who is always with you.

The biggest comfort in my life is the firm knowingness that wherever I may be, God is always in me and with me.

In the busy schedule of college life, it may be hard for you to attend daily Mass or come up with a set prayer schedule. Instead, practice the Prescence of God by talking to Him anywhere and everywhere.

For example, in the class room, if you have trouble to comprehend something, just say “Dear Holy Spirit, I don’t understand it, please help me.” In the dining hall, if you run into some good food, give thanks to God. If you are about late for some activity, ask God to help. If you make it in time, thank Him, if you are late, still thank Him for not being too late. I am just throw in some little examples. You get the idea. By including God in your life, thinking of Him often, you will build intimacy with Him.

My point is to talk to God often, not any formal prayer, just engage in some conversation here and there. Then at night you can do your Rosary or Chaplet and read your Bible.

Try this, invite God into the details of your life, you will feel much closer to God. When you draw near to God, God will draw himself near to you. Try this.

And, remember to call your Mom everyday. Yes, everyday. That’s what both of my daughter and son do. You won’t feel so far away from home by calling Mom everyday.

God bless!

Do you have a Spiritual Director? If not, maybe you should think of one.🙂

And I think I have mentioned this before?

I find saying a daily Rosary is a good thing when I am going through a dry period. The prayers and meditations are already laid out and help get me through.

Your description sounds very much like what I have been reading in “Fire Within,” by Fr. Thomas Dubay. I highly recommend this book, which discusses prayer through the wisdom of St. Teresa of Avila and St. John of the Cross. It is taking me a while to work through it, as it is very deep, but I am finding it well worth the effort. It is available in almost any Catholic bookstore or online.

Also, you might want to take a look at this excellent little article on a prayer routine, by Fr. John McCloskey.

God bless you!

A disciplined, regular, and yes, scheduled out prayer life is precisely the beginning of the “something more” you are seeking.

Did you try the Divine Office yet–if not the full office, one or more of its hours?

It sounds like you should be in a Catholic college where you could study theology and Catholic philosophy. I attended a Catholic university and we were required to take 15 units of philosophy for graduation. Thomas Acquinas along with philosophy of being, logic, philosophy of man, etc satisfied my hunger and thirst when I was 18. Attending daily mass can almost guarantee a diploma in 4 years! Good luck:thumbsup:
