I guess you’re referring to the Paul Newman film, which is wonderful. However, there is another film with the same title, The Verdict, which is a 1946 murder mystery starring Sydney Greenstreet, Peter Lorre, and Joan Lorring, which is one my favorite films of this genre. It’s hard to get a hold of, though, and seldom airs on television.

I thought he was good in Judgment in Nurenburg too. I almost didn’t recognize him, it was following his accident and reconstructive surgery.
I don’t love Joan Crawford partly because of her dislike of wire hangers. That book was terrifying.
The Heiress is a very good movie. I thought Montgomery Clift was really good in it as was Olivia de Haviland. (did you know Olivia and Joan Fontaine were sisters and had a bitter sibling rivalry?)
Yes, I heard about the rivalry between the sisters although I also heard it may have been exaggerated or even fabricated. Olivia is now pushing 100!
I did not know she was still living! They were both great Hollywood acyresses. I would love to find a book about both of them. I heard they rarely spoke. Maybe they were under contract at different studios.
being melodramatic seemed characteristic of many performances back in the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s.
It was part of the acting style, particularly in, well, melodramas. Today many actors are so realistic that sometimes you don’t even know they’re acting. I remember Bette Davis once said about acting that you have to make the audience think you’re putting in at least a little effort.
I agree. that was the style of acting back then.
I agree with this statement. There is a whole slew of actors that don’t act, they are just themselves no matter what part they play. And somehow it works. But sometimes I wonder if it is actually acting.
