“Representative Peter King Continues His Assault On The Catholic Church.”
WASHINGTON, March 24, 2006 - Catholics for Faithful Citizenship calls on Catholics to speak out on the most recent round of hate speech by Catholic Rep. Peter King (R-NY).
In a pathetic attempt to deflect criticism of HR 4437, King, the bills co-sponsor, has amplified the hateful and disgusting nature of his anti-church rhetoric. King said Thursday that Catholic leaders opposed to this legislation “should spend more time protecting little boys from pedophile priests.”
“Rep. King is a church upon himself.” said Jeff Sinnard, spokesperson for Catholics for Faithful Citizenship. “Over the years, Mr. King has felt free to criticize many religious traditions from Islam to Evangelical Christians. He has been persistent and vicious in his attacks on the Catholic Church including the Bishops and the Vatican.”
King describes himself as a practicing Catholic. Given his level of distain for Catholic Social Teaching and Catholic leadership, we suggest Rep. King continue practicing. He appears to have a way to go. For some remedial reading perhaps Rep. King could start with the story of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10) or the Beatitudes (Matthew 5). If he has the time, a quick scan of the red-letters in the New Testament would be instructive.
