OK, I’m home from college for the week, and I’m going back tomorrow for summer school, so this is a temporary situation. I’m pretty sure I’m in a state of mortal sin right now, and have been for quite some time. I know I should go to confession, but I can’t seem to stop sinning right now so any act of contrition I make would be pretty hypocritical and hollow. For example, I went to confession about two weeks ago and I think I lasted two hours before I fell back into mortal sin.
That being the case, I’ve decided to stop recieving the Eucharist for a while until I can sort my problems out and stop committing mortal sin on a daily basis. At school this is ok and I can go to church and just remain in the pew during Communion. I feel sad that I can’t take Communion and also slightly embarrassed, but I just try and focus on prayer. Here at home it’s different. When I go to church with my mom, I just can’t do that. I know she would think it rediculous and scrupulous if I decided not to recieve Communion. She would demand to know why and might even have a whispered argument with me in church about how silly I was being. She is kind of a “cafeteria catholic”, as I have been until recently, and she doesn’t think confession is all that important, nor does she really subscribe to the idea of “being in mortal sin”. I know she would be upset with me and I can’t really face that right now.
Last week I went to church with her, and although I knew I shouldn’t, I took communion. I don’t want to do that today. My question is, which is worse, to take communion in a state of mortal sin or to miss the Sunday obligation? I know I should just go and not recieve, but I also know that right now, I’m not strong enough to do that.
