Mayor “Diamond” Joe Quimby, from the TV series “The Simpsons,” once found himself listening to talk radio while a Rush Limbaugh wannabe derided him as an “illiterate, tax-cheating, wife-swapping, pot-smoking spendocrat.” Quimby’s wounded response was, “Hey … I am no longer illiterate!”

Is it me or does John Allen seem to be “getting it” lately?

Very good description of the problems of reporter treatment of the Church. Hope the NCR staff all reads it too!

I’ve only been reading him for two or three years, but I think he has been impartial and to the point during that time. I think he stands out among the contributors to the National Catholic Reporter

Some may read it… whether they respond to it in any meaningful way is another question.

Allen is by far and away the best source over there. I used to read a lot of other NCRep for “know thine enemy” purposes, but it got nauseating - and I really didn’t relish the idea of inflating their web traffic counts.

His biggest consistent weakness is that he often uses the descriptors ‘liberal’ and ‘conservative’ to describe Church ruminations, when what he really means (most of the time, although not always) is ‘heterodox’ and ‘orthodox’. Of course, I recognize that to use the proper descriptors would likely jeopardize his employment there 😃

He is one of about a dozen or so Catholic columnists I have on RSS feeds. I’ll read the article tonight.
