I was raised Roman Catholic and have always been proud of my faith so needless to say, what I have posted below is very disturbing to me. A Protestant friend of mine who is critical of our Church sent this to me. She claims that the mass is a form of witchcraft. Can anyone here make sense of this? I am in total shock.

Witchcraft teaches that after a person goes through Purgatory, he is reincarnated and is more powerful in his next life than he was before. After several reincarnations, he will become purified enough to live with the gods and goddesses, precisely the same end as the Catholics teach.

Both Catholics and Witches teach that the host becomes the actual body of their respective gods

To the Roman Catholic, the host becomes the actual body of Jesus Christ; the witch believes the host actually becomes the body of their pagan deity, “I.H.S. - or Iris, Horus, and Semiramis”.

This concept is known in both circles as trans-substantiation.

Both witchcraft and Roman Catholicism teach that the universe is comprised of five elements:

Air
Fire
Earth
These occultic five elements are also found in the Catholic mass.

Exactly which era of witch are we talking about? The original witch in the obscure setting that they populated, prior to Shakespeare, were simply going out into the forests and brewing drugs, of which they consumed during the course of the evening, and has given rise to the cackle laughter long distance memory.

There was no ceremony, there were only antics. The movement was revived in the 1900s and termed wiccan, made into a religious phenomenon. They borrowed heavily from not only cultic history but also from things around them. And for some reason the dark side always loves to replicate the Catholic Church, they have a morbid fascination with the Catholic Church. Don’t know why that happens so often. It is a mystery to me.

There was no electricity I would of thought candles of some sort were just standard practice for anything occurring indoors.
Use of candles is a key part of the OT Jewish liturgy with the 7 golden lampstands which are also seen mentioned in the heavenly liturgy surrounding Jesus in the book of revelation rev 1:12. While it my be said the seven candlesticks are representative of the 7 churches , it can’t be ignored that the 7 candlesticks are being used as the symbol a tangible thing in the liturgy in this verse. They are used in a positive sense to convey something important and used to paint a picture of the scene Jesus stands in, in his robe (to his feet)

I would response to the claims of your Protestant friend with the words of Jesus, after his enemies accused him of having a demon, "Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment.” (John 7:24)

There are indeed many similarities between the witchcraft mentioned in the original post and the Catholic Mass but nearly all of those same similarities are also shared with Judaism. In the Old Testament, God prescribed or approved an altar, a lampstand, incense, bells to be sewn into the hem of the high priest’s robe, statues on the Ark of the Covenant and in Solomon’s Temple, instruments for sprinkling water, and even blood, and even “human sacrifice” of the sort practiced at a Catholic Mass, see below.*

Pretty much the only thing that the witchcraft mentioned in the original post shares with Catholicism that it does not also share with Judaism is transubstantiation. Catholics believe that just as Jesus had the power to heal the sick and forgive sins and he in turn empowered his apostles to heal the sick and forgive sins, Jesus also had the power to transubstantiate one substance into another substance, such as water into wine at Cana and bread and wine into his body and blood at the Last Supper, and he in turn empowered his apostles, and they in turn empowered others, to transubstantiate bread and wine into Jesus’ body and blood, whenever the church assembles to celebrate the Lord’s Supper, i.e., the Catholic Mass, when he told them to “Do this, as often as you…” (See 1 Corinthians 11:18-32) This was so that we weak humans might have another tangible, sacramental way of participating in Jesus’ saving sacrifice on the Cross. Other such sacramental participations include Baptism and Confession.

In 1 Corinthians 10:14-21, St Paul also discussed some of the similarities between the sacrificial worship practiced by pagans of his day and the sacrificial worship practiced by Israel of old and by the Christians of his day at the Lord’s Supper. The main difference between pagans and Israel and Christians was that pagans offered sacrificial worship to idols/demons and Israel and Christians offered sacrificial worship to the God. In his discussion in verse 21, “the table of demons” in context refers the pagan altar and to the food offered on it in sacrificial worship to pagan idols/demons and “the cup of demons” refers to a pagan altar-cup and to the drink offered in it in sacrificial worship to pagan idols/demons. In the same way, in context “the table of the Lord” refers to a Christian altar and the food offered on it in sacrificial worship to God (see Hebrews 13:10), i.e., to the bread that was transubstantiated and became “a participation in the body of Christ” (1 Corinthians 10:17), and “the cup of the Lord” refers to a Christian altar-cup and the drink offered in it in sacrificial worship to God, i.e., to the wine that was transubstantiated and became “a participation in the blood of Christ” (1 Corinthians 10:17; 11:27) This is especially apparent when one remembers that “the table of the Lord” is biblically synonymous with “the altar of the Lord.” (See Malachi 1:7)

• Regarding the sort of “human sacrifice” practiced in Catholicism and Judaism, in the original post there seemed to be the implication that Catholics transubstantiate bread and wine into Jesus at Mass only to kill him and offer him as a human sacrifice day after day but this is absurd. Jesus died once and having risen gloriously from the dead, being clothed in immortality, can never die again. Catholics (Catholic priests) indeed transubstantiate bread and wine into Jesus at Mass and offer him in sacrifice day after day but they do not kill to do so. Instead, they offer him to God in the only way he can now be offered, i.e., as an unharmed, living sacrifice, just as Moses, following God’s command, offered the entire tribe of Levi as an unharmed, living sacrifice, “a wave offering,” to God in Numbers 8:11-21. Since Jesus still bears the wounds of his passion and death in his glorified body, his sacrifice on the cross is brought to remembrance wherever he now appears at Mass, sort of like how seeing dismembered or disfigured war veterans brings to remembrance their wartime sacrifices.
