I think that particular issue of the case of the OP has already sufficiently been dealt with. The law of Charity applies and what was done was not a bad thing at all in this particular case. However, the conversation has shifted to the general practice of receiving communion in this manner on a regular basis without a serious reason. It is my contention that the Code of Canon Law does not provide for that practice even though the strict requirement is that at least one reception of Communion must be in the context of Mass and the other may be apart from Mass.

While Catholicism for Dummies is actually a decent work as an intro to the intro of Catholicism I think what is missing is that the Law of the Church does not provide for the singular reception of communion under the species of wine (The Precious Blood) alone unless there is a serious reason to do so such as gluten allergy or grave necessity.
