I was more sure of my faith BEFORE I spent the last few days reading and participating in these dicussions. God, I hate religion. I believe in God, I am pretty sure I believe in Jesus (I do pray to Him daily) and I even came into the Roman Catholic Church in 2000, but now I am learning about Orthodoxy, and reading posts that back up and bring up my own doubts and fears regarding the bible’s reality, etc…I pray for faith, hope and love, if God wants me to love Him and the Truth is knowable, why is it so insanely complicated!!! Why won’t He erase my doubts? If faith is a gift from God and I have asked…:banghead:

Religion is complicated because the world is complicated. There, isn’t that simple? 😃

In all seriousness, though, I understand where you’re coming from. I remember before I became interested in actually understanding my beliefs (zounds!), everything was so simple: Jesus loves you, go to mass, be nice, yada yada. Then, I started reading up on things, you know, just poking around. Whoa, wait, there’s an “unforgivable sin”? But God can forgive anything! And why is masturbation, of all things, sinful? After all, it doesn’t harm anyone, right? And what’s all this stuff about “transubstantiation,” and “ex cathedra,” and what about people in Africa who never heard of Christianity before?

All I can say is to keep reading. It does all make sense eventually, but the thing to keep in mind is that the world is vast, its facets many, and that nothing in it exists in a vacuum. Every page of the bible and every paragraph in the Catechism informs and speaks to every other part in some small way, and understanding any one thing perfectly requires all the rest perfectly as well. Think of it like a 1,000 piece jigsaw puzzle: it looks all nice and crisp and clean when it’s still in the box, and you can see the pretty picture it’s of right there on the cover, and then you dump it out and wow-ieee does it ever look complicated! But keep at it, and eventually the picture arises again, only this time it’s bigger and more real.

Take a break, step away from the computer and refocus is what you need to do. CAF is a small subsection of Catholics, you can still be a good Catholic (or even a good person) and not be “orthodox”. Faith and spirituality does not always come from dotting every i and crossing every t to most people.

Go and so a personal spiritual exercise of self-discovery as to why you think you are a good Catholic. Even without internet forms, doubt still comes to us at times in relation to our internal spirituality.

So, step back, refocus and find that part that drew you to the Catholic Church in the first place. Your path appears to be away from here.

Praying the Rosary will strengthen your faith.
So will reading the Bible prayerfully.

peace to you,

Religion can be a real bubbling pot of messiness once you take your own faith and crank up the stove of doubt. :o

Your options are:

You can stand there over the stove and adjust the seasoning till you think you got it right…

You can turn off the heat and ignore what’s inside to your own bliss…

Or in my case…

The heat boiled away everything in the pot (I think you catch my drift ;))

Whatever works best for you…🙂

***Hi, peso!

…at first I thought that this was a crank call… then I saw your cry for help (smilie 😛 ); so I thought… this must be serious business…

You are closer than you think… :bigyikes:

Wisdom shines bright and never grows dim; those who love her and look for her can easily find her. She is quick to make herself known to anyone who desires her. Get up early in the morning to find her, and you will have no problem; you will find her sitting at your door. To fasten your attention on Wisdom is to gain perfect understanding. If you look for her, you will soon find peace of mind, because she will be looking for those who are worthy of her, and she will find you wherever you are. She is kind and will be with you in your every thought. Wisdom begins when you sincerely want to learn. To desire Wisdom is to love her; to love her is to keep her laws; to keep her laws is to be certain of immortality; immortality will bring you close to God.*** (Wisdom 6:12-19)

I’m going to help you on your trek:
  • first, empty your heart and mind of doubt–doubt is a tool used by Satan to conquer us even when he quotes the Word of God. (Remember the story of Creation? He used Eve’s knowledge of God’s Word to confuse her and to cause her to sin: "…hey… so Yahweh told you not to eat of the trees… huh?–paraphrased–Naaah, you will not die… trust me! He’s just afraid of a little competition; eat the fruit and you’ll gain knowledge… you’ll be just like Him… on my word! (Moral: When we doubt God we become easy pray to our ego, other people’s egos and Satan’s murderous hatred.)
  • second, humble yourself to God; be slow to demand answers and quick to embrace patient and laborious study of the Scriptures, always realizing that the Holy Spirit is anxious to bring you into the Body of Christ and to endow you with the Gifts and Graces that He Wills. But remember that it is God who sets the boundaries and the time schedules: i.e.: “ask and you shall receive” does not equate to, “God is on demand, just point the remote and click!”
  • last, continue to question your motives, your undestanding and your resolve to obediently follow Christ–it is not all who call Me Lord, Lord, who will enter into the Kingdom of Heaven but he who listens to the Father!
Maran atha!

Thanks, I appreciate that, and I will take the advice 🙂

Dear peso,

God Bless you that you seek to understand. I have been through rough times, too. All the advice so far is wonderful, so I will only add this: if you always ask yourself, what is beautiful, what expresses total love and gift of self, total selfless-ness, total receptiveness, you will gradually come to see the Catholic Church for the light that it is.

And also remember that much antagonism against the Catholic Church is because of the sometimes sin of its members, especially clergy. If you remember that the shepherds have not always been good, but that Jesus promised to with His Bride despite her inner failings, it will help you to take an objective look at the Church’s teachings, and not allow the partial sin within her to not consider them in the light they are meant to be considered.

I will say the 1OF3HM1GB for you right now, that Jesus and Mary carry you through this trial, from which, I am sure you shall emerge stronger in love of faith, than if you had never come to your doubts.

Believe me, I’ve been there, and the answers can be found. Just keep digging, and be patient.

In Her Love,
scott

Thanks, I’m grateful your prayers, and to all who have reponded with concern. I don’t think I’ll be going anywhere, I just became very agitated by my discussion with a fundamentalist, but i should have known better than to get involved with that thread; I am really more interested in how the Eastern Orthodox church can have apostolic succession as she does, and the meaning of that, as neither their church nor ours have been destroyed, (ie. the gates of hell have not prevailed against either of us) and there is only 1 truth, but in reality 2 churches that actually have the potential to be the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic church, both 2000 years old, etc…but that’s a different topic altogether, which I realize comes down to the interpretation of Christ’s words to Peter, and what His exact meaning was…but again, a different “thread”? However, as I believe God used Our Lady of Guadalupe specifically to bring me to her son and His church, my heart belongs to our church, but as people have said, I have to keep reading and praying, and I’ve no intention of stopping either of those 😛
Peace of Christ to you ALL

Faith is a gift from God. It is His revelation to us, however that may happen. Religion, is our response to that faith.

So, seek faith before religion. Go to the source of faith, Jesus Christ. Remember Jesus words, “ye must be born again.” That is, die to self and give your life to Jesus. He will bless it and return it to you, where you will experience joy a hundred times over. He is asking you to be his disciple.

Until you get a relationship with Jesus, religion will make no sense and some of the orthodoxy expressed at this website, can scare the heck out of people who have faith. 😉

God Bless

Can you provide more details about what’s troubling you or what has caused you to have doubts?

We are dealing with concepts that are often beyond our understanding and language. Hence we often really complicate things. But God and all the faith teaches is very simple. Just not always to us. it’s important to have the whole faith too. Otherwise if there’s any error it will lead to more errors. Hang in there.👍

This is great advise. Couldn’t say it better.
Remember that all the core to living in faith is Love. Love of God and Love of neighbor.
Pray in simple ways - giving thanks - offering all to the Father (even your doubts).

Peace on your Journey
James

Rule #2, don’t forget Rule #1. 🙂

Good solid study won’t contradict that. Use it as your litmus.
