This Sunday....

Hello,

Um, I thought of this the other day, and many of you are likely to think that this is a lame question, but I am going to ask it anyway. If I am not mistaken, the feast of th Holy Family is celebrated the Sunday after Christmas, and the feast of Mary, Mother of God is celebrated on January 1st…well…I think they fall on the same day this year…this Sunday…so what happens? Does one take precedence over the other?

in this diocese the feast of the Holy Family is celebrated this Saturday, Dec. 31. A solemnity always takes precedence over a Memorial, a Feast or a Sunday.

If you look in your parish bulletin where it lists the Mass intentions every day, it should list the feast being celebrated.

Are you sure of your date?

The Feast of the Holy Family is celebrated on the Sunday in the Octave of Christmas, or if it lacks one (as this year) on December 30 (not 31). All of my calendars list it falling on this Friday.

(Also: Solemnities take precedence over Sundays in Ordinary time or Easter, but are transferred should their calendar dates fall on a Sunday of Advent or Lent)
