This will seem like a really stupid question, is it ok to make a joke

that may seem derogatory but was meant to be funny? E.G. I am going on a trip with elderly parents and was requesting several things to make it better for them. The hotel were v. good and said as they are elderly we shall place your room near the lifts. I thanked the hotel and said - ‘They are both physically fine - just as long as we dont choke each other by the end of the week, we’ll be fine’ He did laugh (and to be truthful I always think if you can make someone laugh, they’ll remember you and keep to their promises as hotels can fall short they promise you the earth and you end up in the back room). For some reason I now feel maybe this was ‘wrong’ - as obviously we wont be like that, although arguments are the norm in our family. Am I taking everything a bit too seriously?

Also, I cannot recall Jesus ever making any ‘jokes’ . Are ‘jokes’ wrong and/or could they be seen as ‘lies’ - is there any position on jokes in the cc? I’m probably slowing going off my head, but thought I would ask.

No there is nothing wrong with making jokes. It is not a lie, nor did you intend to hurt anyoneby it. God has a very good since of humor, and when I doubt that I just look in the mirror. :D.

I mean look at the platapus. those are funny looking.
 
Jokes in good jest are part of life!!!

Now if your mother had a parinoid fear of being choked to death, or if your father was worried about the trip going arwy, it’d be cruel to play on that.

But it’s harmless and funny.
 
As long as its reasonably obvious that you are joking, I can’t see how that could be considered lying. It would be a stretch for anyone to say people would literally think you are choking each other.

My guess is that you may be being too scrupulous, there is nothing wrong with what you did.
 
P.S. Jesus called the Apostles John and his brother James “sons of thunder” or Boanerges.

He was ribbing them for their comment 😃

I certainly don’t think making a “joke” is wrong – in fact, at my age (I’m not going to mention how OLD I am) I try to put a smile on my face and “laugh” at everything. I think your joke was kind of funny and I’m sure it was taken that way.

Actually, I read once some commentary about the parables. Apparently, they are full of humor and irony that would have been easily understood by the Jews of his time. However, as you probably know, humor is a culturally based phenomenon. So, we don’t get the humorous side of the tale.

HaHa very good! As we would say about my Dad - God must have made him in his coffee break - as his legs are much shorter than his torso would suggest. Mind you he dosen’t like it!
