I am no scholar when it comes to the Latin based languages and my knowledge of French and Spanish is just enough to get me into trouble. But this is a question/friendly debate I have had with a number of fellow catholics and I would like to hear your opinions.
Thomas Aquinas’ last name is pronounced by most catholics as “A-kween-es”. Yet in Spanish and French, words with the “qui” spelling usually have a hard “kee” sound, i.e. aqui = here (Spanish), qui = who (French)
So how are we supposed to pronounce “Aquinas”? Is there a right way and a wrong way? And if it is pronounced “A-kween-es” how do we know that is correct? I’m sure no one remembers talking with him personally
Just a thought for the afternoon.
