How does St. Thomas understand the passions?

Is it that the passions are the sense appetite?

Before discussing Thomas, I would like to introduce a distinction between need and desire. Need is an animal search for “objects” to enhance the animal’s well-being. Need can be satisfied. Desire, on the other hand,
