I have begun reading Thomas Merton and was amazed. Very deep spiritual insight and yet down to earth in many aspects. His early life exhibited many of the modern struggles common to all of us (fascinating story of his conversion). I think one person commenting on him said his honesty about his own shortcomings and so on is refreshing. It is hard to describe but it is just down to earth and modern (college life issues, etc).
I am starting with a compilation of his works but have also ordered the Sign of Jonas which I saw was highly recommended.
Occasionally, I have to re read some of his deeper writings several times to get it. Great spiritual gift to both the Catholic and non Catholic world.
I was amused where he said a lot of protestantism was a mix of sociology, history and something else.
So much depth to the Catholic Church. Often un or under appreciated.
