Whilst I know people who are elderly that are as sharp as tacts, I know that’s not always that common.

There have been a few senile moments among the LDS presidents. I remember one event, in particular, with Ezra Taft Benson jumping out of his chair during a general conference address and interrupting the speaker basically just to say, “Amen, brother”. It was sort of funny and sort of sad.

Yes, the order from the beginning of their church. I will bite my tongue to keep from saying what I really want to say about it tho since my brand of humor isn’t always appreciated.

They also don’t use caffeine, but I’m not certain that’s an advantage. I know a lot of really old people who love their coffee and tea. But I don’t know any really old people who smoke.

It may not be forbidden, but a number of the Mormons I worked with and a lot of the ones I encountered when in Utah visiting (non-Mormon) friends avoided Coke, Pepsi, other cola drinks specifically because they contained caffeine. They constantly drank 7-up or similar uncaffeinated sodas instead.

As this was about 10 to 20 years ago, things may have changed over time.

I checked this source and the author says she uses caffeine but it also talks about Mormons who choose not to.

Yeah. I think there are a good number of Mormons who avoid it. I never had any qualms about Coke when I was LDS. Most of the Mormons I hung with drank it. They sell it on BYU campuses.

Actually, the Mormons in the Amazon threads did smoke and drink and do things John Q Public does despite their church’s claims that members don’t smoke, drink, cuss, do drugs, etc.

So in the case of the new Mormon leader, it’s probably more genetics than anything else.

Some may, but I’ve known quite a few who did not. Some of those were working in visible professional positions and in some cases had been a top graduate of a Mormon school and hired by a connected Mormon working in government, management etc. They may have felt a need to watch their public behavior. Whether they did what they wanted at home behind locked doors, I don’t know, but at work they were strait-laced and stood out for it because many others werent.
