Agreed…so who here has been taking Abraham and Jeptha as role models?
Ever heard of a place called Calvary? Ever heard of the sacrifice (of one who is true Man as well as true God) that took place there? That same sacrifice entered into at every single Catholic Mass?

You betcha Abraham is our role model.

I doubt that he’s your role model in all things. For example, he practiced polygamy by marrying both Sarah and Hagar, not to mention that Sarah was his half-sister (a little incest there).

Genesis 16:3: So, after Abram had lived ten years in the land of Canaan, Sarai, Abram’s wife, took Hagar the Egyptian, her slave-girl, and gave her to her husband Abram as a wife.

Genesis 20:11-12: Abraham said, “I did it because I thought, There is no fear of God at all in this place, and they will kill me because of my wife. 12 Besides, she is indeed my sister, the daughter of my father but not the daughter of my mother; and she became my wife.

This sort of thing brings to mind Tom Wolfe’s hilarious novel “Man in Full”. A very unchurched young man ends up in prison. He requested a book of some mindless sort, but was, by mistake, given the writings of an ancient Greek philosopher. In that book, the philosopher talks a lot about Zeus. The young man becomes a devotee of Zeus because of the book.

Ultimately, he’s released, and meets an equally unchurched former real estate magnate and salesman extraordinaire and converts the latter to the worship of Zeus. Being a promoter by nature, the former real estate magnate starts a TV evangelism program for Zeus (much like the evangelical shows on there now) and attracts thousands of followers.

The whole thing is hilarious, but as with everything Wolfe writes, there’s a razor edge to it; his point being how unchurched and ignorant people are, and how gullible they are in the hands of a talented promoter.

So Thor? No surprise at all.

There you go!!! Another example of human sacrifice.

I did some research on this group a few years ago when I was researching neo-paganism. It has been around in California, under several different names, since the mid-1980s. What’s new, and what probably picqued the interest of the press, is that they now have an actual building.

Like most attempts to resurrect age-old religions, it’s a dumbed down wimped-out version of the real thing.

I mean if they are not going to do human sacrifice as their forebears in faith did, then they can hardly be said to be genuine believers.
Maybe they’re dispensationalist. 🤷
According to the Wiki article on Asatru, it is based on neo-paganism. Accent on the “neo,” I suppose

All the neo-pagans suffer from a bad case of “we-make-it-up-as-we-go-along”.

BTW my user name is Norse for “twilight”.

In California? Nothing unusual there, just weirdness as usual!
LOL! I get a kick when people continue to make fun of California, and then have to rethink when they pick up their iPhones or look up a fact on Google, go see a movie, take a vacation or attend CAL, UCLA or Stanford. Just usual for us here on the Left Coast, brilliant and weird!😃

Being a follower of Thor might be fun. We could raid and loot a few Christian churches and be buried in a boat when we pass away like the Vikings used to do. 😃

I’m sure that most Texans (and pretty much all who’ve ever spent more than a few minutes in Austin) have heard the slogan “Keep Austin Weird.”

I saw a T-shirt yesterday with the slogan, “Keep Austin 170 Miles Away”

Right. I can’t see Sverker, Thorketil and Halfdan getting excited over guitars, stacking chairs and felt banners. 😃

I’ll have to tell my daughter about that - she lives near Austin & loves it. Portland OR has sort of adopted the “weird” slogan - at least it gets mentioned on Grimm. 😃
