According to that argument there is no need for the molecules of which the brain is composed to understand how they are capable of understanding! There will no longer be a need for such vague poetic language as “A person thinks” or “A person created a computer”. Ultimately we will arrive at detailed explanations of precisely how inanimate molecules produce conscious persons and there will no longer be a need for serious doubt about the fact that only molecules exist…
There is no serious doubt that you are a dogmatic materialist even though you infer the existence of molecules from what you perceive and have direct knowledge only of your intangible thoughts, feelings, perceptions and decisions. Your act of faith in the power of science to explain itself (since it explains scientists!) needs justification… 🙂

The success of science is not evidence of the power of science but of the power of reason - which you claim will ultimately be explained as the product of purposeless, inanimate molecules. If anything is incomprehensible as well as illogical that is! We have more than half an idea of the meaning of “God created the universe” because we are surrounded not only by evidence of Design but of the creativity and ingenuity of living beings and human beings in particular. It is highly appropriate that you have blind faith in blind processes because you stake everything on the supreme power of that which occurs irrationally and fortuitously…
 
It is an argument from odds. Every additional fine tuned constant found ups the odds by magnitudes.

The truely blind and stubborn scientists are those that blindly insist that the only things that exist are those that can be examined by the scientific method. No out-of-the-box thinking here!
Too bad that you are wrong here. No, scientists do not assert any of that kind. But when it comes to facts of external reality, they correctly stick to the scientific method - and the religious scientists, who are quite numerous - do not deviate from the scientific method. No religious scientist would ever submit a paper for peer review and say: "this particular phenomenon can never be explained using the physicalist / materialist method. It can only be explained by stating that “an unknowable being, using magical, inexplicable ways made it somehow happen”. That is what makes them scientists. 🙂

Yes, it WOULD be, if anyone would say that. But you really should learn that no one says it. It is really amazing that you guys keep on burning that straw-man to the ground, instead of engaging in real discussion. Wake up!!

Actually yes. This is precisely the point, it is widely accepted among even all atheist cosmologists that in the absence of fine-tuning, no life would be possible. In the absence of fine-tuning, not even atomic matter would exist!
Maybe you are going to present some peer-reviewed papers which PROVE that even a miniscule deviation would make atomic matter “impossible”. I bet it would make interesting reading.
To the fine-tuning argument, you have essentially replied: "Well, obviously very improbable things have happened, so the improbability of the fine-tuning is not sufficient to indicate design.

First, objection only applies to the version of the teleological argument that says:
  1. the fine-tuning of the universe is either due to chance, necessity, or design
  2. it is not due to chance or necessity
    3 therefore, design.
You simply sweep under the rug both the “chance” and “necessity”. How about PROVING them impossible? I really like the way how you (in general) simply declare the unpalatable options as “impossible” - without giving the slightest reason for it.
It does not apply to my version:
  1. The fine-tuning of the universe for life is highly improbable on atheism
    2,. the fine-tuning is not improbable on theism
  2. therefore, the fine tuning strongly confirms theism over atheism
Irrelevant. You walk of the beach and see 3 twigs forming a triangle. It may be more probable that those twigs were arranged on purpose, but probability does not count! As long as you cannot PROVE that it could not have happened by chance, you have no argument.
Second, your attempted argument fails even against the first version of my argument because you have constructed a straw man. In the first argument, I am not arguing that the improbability alone indicates design; rather the issue is improbability plus independent pattern, that is, specified complexity. So your roulette example is dis-analogous to the task at hand.
What you do here is invoking the odometer-syndrome. 🙂 As you elaborated below.
An example:
A classroom of a hundred students. Each is asked to write down a number at random without consulting the others. A professor, then goes around the room in order asking them to tell the numbers.
Situation A: the numbers are called out: 5, 56, 987, 43, 5/6, 382, 129893, 85…
Situation B: the numbers are called out: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12…99, 100.

Now, both numbers are equally improbable, but in situation A, we would rightly conclude that A occurred by chance, but be strongly inclined to suspect that in B, some tinkering (design) was going on. Situation A is comparable to your roulette example, and so obviously misguided as applied to the fine-tuning. Situation B, however, shows why the specified complexity of the universe makes the existence of a designer probable. The issue is not only improbability, but improbability plus independent pattern. Would you seriously think B was the result of chance?
The pattern only exists in your mind. Suppose the numbers are 31 41 592 653 589 793 238 4 6 2 6433 832 79 5 0 288 419 716 939 937 510 58 209 7494 45923 07 816 40 62 862 089 986 280 3482 5342 1170 679 821 480… etc. It would seem to be a totally “patternless” sequence. In reality it has a very interesting pattern to it. Even putting a “pattern” into the sequence it cannot be stated that it was “designed”.

To put it simply: “order does not imply design”. Repeat it a few thousand times.

  1. The universe is finely tuned for life, therefore it is 100% certain the universe is finely tuned for life. Which is just the useless statement: “the universe is finely tuned for life, therefore the universe is finely tuned for life.”
  2. “It is highly improbable the universe would be finely tuned for life.” Since I assume we agree on statement 2, the fine-tuning requires explanation, as the teleological argument above shows.
The universe is extremely hostile to life - which is not an assumption, but a hard, brute fact. Tough luck, buddy.

Those beautiful snowflakes! What an intricate design they exhibit. How could some random, blind, purposeless process come up with such perfect symmetry? And not two of them are the same!
Here’s the thing. They don’t all have perfect symmetry and there is no way of knowing if “no two are the same.”

God maintains the Universe. God made all the stuff. God also made all the systems. That is, God made it so when you breathe, oxygen gets into your blood and is used by your cells and carbon dioxide is expelled. He made photosynthesis which why plants are green. He made a Universe where change is the rule. Things change over time. Tiny things grow and become adults seeds sprout, some animals change their gender during their lives, water washes away the banks of rivers that widen and change course. Volcanoes erupt and build islands. This is God’s Will and His Creation: a Creation of Time and Relativity and Change. Change through time is called “evolution.”

Our understanding of the world evolves from childhood to adulthood. We stop believing in Santa Claus at the North Pole and start understanding Saint Nicholas. We stop thinking all the Volkswagon Beetles are talking to their owners and wishing we had one and start appreciating different kinds of vehicles. Boys stop hating girls and decide they might not be so bad after all. Everything evolves.

Scientists, and I was someone who worked in science for years, just understand more of the systems. God made you so that when you burn yourself it hurts and you stop doing that. This protects you. God doesn’t put an invisible shield between you and all things that can burn you, He could, but He does not. He chose another way. Scientists are just people who figured out what the system is God created so that would happen and how other stuff happens.

What God created is quite a wonder. People like to know how it all works. God also created the intellect and curiosity that motivates science to do what it does.

Of course, you can completely reject science. You can never go to a doctor again or take any medicine. You can accept whatever the course of things is that God is created for you. You can throw away the computer you are using to communicate here and the TV you probably watch, and the car you drive and the microwave and the electric lights and all the things you have courtesy of science. You can go naked into the wilderness. God will not interfere with your freewill.

They just can’t get over their ridiculous obsession to find natural explanations for natural phenomena. They simply disregard the best, most economical and simplest “explanation” of all: “An unknowable being, using inexplicable means made everything somehow happen”. And how could anything be “natural”, if everything was created? We have a perfectly valid word: “artifical”, which is the one we should use for created things. “Natural” things would “simply” exist. But they are just a figment of our imagination.

Even those scientists who are otherwise deeply religious suffer from this misguided approach just like their atheistic peers. They shamelessly conduct their research as if there were no God, as if they would gain anything by closing their eyes and pretending that there is a nature, and there are laws of nature. Of course we know that they are just fooling themselves. As it is stated in the infallible dogmas: 69: God keeps all created things in existence. (De fide.) If God’s attention would wander for a split second, the whole Universe would crumble into nonexistence. There is no “gravity”, of course. If God would not meticulously keep the planets on their orbit, they would just wander off into some random direction. Those beautiful snowflakes! What an intricate design they exhibit. Poor, blind scientists. 🙂 Oops… wait. Does not the word “explanation” imply understanding? Imply an insight into “how” something happens? Obviously not according to those (quite numerous posters) who scorn “physicalism” and “materialism”, who repeatedly say that scientists are intentionally stubborn to even contemplate the idea of God.

I have not gone through many of the posts, but I think that your are quite confused about science and about religion.

There is nothing wrong to do science as if it there were no God. Science is simply a method to create the simplest model to explain something. First that does not mean that the model is correct. Second a cause-effect relationship is created on step at the time. Bringing God into play does not make sense because He is the first and un-caused cause and true science knows that we still have to deal with a lot of caused causes to move up in the ladder of our understanding. A lot of the stuff that you hear of is not science but philosophical speculations in regard to physics and other subjects.

Your pattern is the use of grouped symbols where the symbols are from the set 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9, and 0
 
It is what the dogma says, loud and clear. It is just another form of the “sustaining cause” argument. Catholicism rejects the deistic concept that God simply started the ball rolling, and then stepped back to “admire” his handiwork (apart from a few “miracles”). I would not dare to call the dogma “asinine”, even though I disagree with it.
But the dogma does not say that laws of nature don’t exist. If you think it does, you have not understood it at all and you have given it a meaning that no Catholic and certainly no Catholic scientist gives it.

Why don’t you read the article and find out yourself? Studying it would also inform you about the science of abiogenesis.

Buffalo I am not sure that I understand what you are saying here. While I agree that design always contains patterns I still do not understand this first proposition. I tend to have the same reaction that Spock has, and my knee jerk reaction is that probably you are wrong. Can you please elaborate on you proposition?
