I was thinking the other day about my traditional Catholic community I belong to. I get frustrated because there is constant bishop bashing. I was thinking one day that the current bishop wasn’t the one who invited the FSSP to the diocese, but he didn’t ask them to leave, even though he could have. I don’t think anyone else in my parish ever thought of this. Has anyone here ever actually thanked their bishop for allowing the fraternity in the diocese?

Can I thank the Bishop of another diocese in another state? The FSSP has not been able, as a Society, to have regular masses in NYC, not for lack of trying, but I do attend their masses in another state sometimes.

Why couldn’t you? Maybe if the bishop from one state learns there are a number of people from another state attending in his diocese because the other diocese won’t allow the FSSP, that bishop may make a shout out to the unmovIng bishop that maybe he should invite the FSSP.

Maybe. It’s worth a try.

This is a great idea! We need to support our Bishops. There is nothing more traditional than the statement “Where the bishop is, there is the Church.” 😃
Chapter 8. Let nothing be done without the bishop
See that you all follow the bishop, even as Jesus Christ does the Father, and the presbytery as you would the apostles; and reverence the deacons, as being the institution of God. Let no man do anything connected with the Church without the bishop. Let that be deemed a proper Eucharist, which is [administered] either by the bishop, or by one to whom he has entrusted it. Wherever the bishop shall appear, there let the multitude [of the people] also be; even as, wherever Jesus Christ is, there is the Catholic Church. It is not lawful without the bishop either to baptize or to celebrate a love-feast; but whatsoever he shall approve of, that is also pleasing to God, so that everything that is done may be secure and valid.
Chapter 9. Honour the bishop
Moreover, it is in accordance with reason that we should return to soberness [of conduct], and, while yet we have opportunity, exercise repentance towards God. It is well to reverence both God and the bishop. He who honours the bishop has been honoured by God; he who does anything without the knowledge of the bishop, does [in reality] serve the devil. Let all things, then, abound to you through grace, for you are worthy. You have refreshed me in all things, and Jesus Christ [shall refresh] you. You have loved me when absent as well as when present. May God recompense you, for whose sake, while you endure all things, you shall attain unto Him.

Just wanted to point out that the bishop can’t necessarily ask the FSSP to leave. If they have a canonically erected house in the diocese, the bishop cannot ask them to leave, even if he wants to. (or I should say, he can ask them to leave, but he can’t kick them out)

Of course I suppose he could make life rough for them even so.

Well, our FSSP currently share a parish and rent a house, so…

Ok. In that case the bishop wants them to stay 🙂
I dunno. He already suspended the FSSP from celebrating Mass publicly once. I dunno, it seems like people want the bishop to give give give, but why would a bishop want to give so much to a group of people who have nothing good to say about him?

Because the bishop doesn’t want them to run off to the SSPX?

It sounds like the people there have some legitimate complaints if the bishop suspended the FSSP priests from celebrating mass publicly.

Seems like the best way to thank the bishop is to keep attending their Mass. 😉

As a Society of Apostolic Life, I think the Bishop can place a demand for them to leave. They’re still a bit different than exempt religious. The fact that a Bishop can suspend members of Societies speaks for itself.

He can but the suspensions can also be appealed.

If they are canonically erected he cannot require them to leave. He can prevent them from engaging in public ministry.

When it comes to discipline, the Bishop takes care of that. Whereas with exempt religious, the Bishop can’t do squat.

So what I’m wondering is when discipline becomes “get out of my house”?

He could prevent them from using a diocesan church, for example, but he couldn’t tell them they have to leave their own house, unless it belongs to the diocese. And even then, they could purchase or rent a property in the diocese.

I think about half of the FSSP apostolates are canonically erected houses.

Yes, we are very grateful to him for what he did for traditional mass.

Which is what happened. The bishop erred in what he could do and what he couldn’t do. Bit still, charity says you don’t send the bishop hate-filled emails and then demand he give you your own parish.

Do they still not require the bishop’s permission to celebrate mass publicly and to hear confessions?

Yes. But if they have their own place then the line between public & private mass is pretty wishy-washy.
