Those that are born intersexed

Greetings all,

A friend of mine brought this topic up the other day I honestly had no idea or clue about how to respond. Can anyone tell me about what the Church’s teaching is in regards to a person that is intersexed, or born with both male and female parts? Should such a person have corrective surgery at birth? What if the doctor somehow “gets it wrong” and the person really should have been the other sex?

What about a person who, for one reason or another, never had any kind of corrective surgery at birth and still is biologically “both sexes”? Should this person undergo some type of psychological counseling and hormone therapy and then become a certain sex?

How does all of this line up in regards to the Sacrament of Holy Orders and the Sacrament of Marriage? I was really kinda stumped on this one, and I am pretty ignorant I admit. I am sorry if I offended anyone with incorrect or inappropriate terms in this post. Thanks, and God bless.
 
As far as I can tell the official stance is that there is no official stance. Each and every case is handled individually, but in my experience the answer is always the same.

1.) Completely barred from religious orders. If found out while in an order already, you will be kicked out.
2.) Chastity, marriage will never be sanctioned by the church.

The church still seems to condone surgery at birth, which is now showing to be extraordinarily problematic. It’s shown no signs of changing this stance.

Is that not completely unjust? This person, through no fault of their own, cannot have meaning to their life either through marriage or religious order… Basically, either they’re going to end up very depressed, or leave the Catholic Church.

Surely, it is not the (external) genitals which are important - it is a person’s chromasomes which are throughout their body, that determine whether they are male or female?

No, there are women who are XY and men who are XX. Some do not even know it.

I am what is called a mosaic. I have XX, XY and XXY cells.
 
does anyone know the official Church teaching on the subject?
 
Hello Fellow Christians, this is Brad (Brad222), a new Member to “Catholic Answer Forums”, and in that I was born intersexed; I wish to make a comment here in this forum. First of all, let me state that I am not Catholic, but have always believed in the World’s Catholic recognized Saints, although due to my religous beliefs I am more suited to the Greek Orthodox faith. I have studied the World’s Christian religions all my life, and especially so after having had my first actual death experience at the age of two, where as I miraculously came back to life, Since then I’ve not only experienced yet another actual death experience simular to the above, but have also experienced at least four near-death experiences in my life time. Why am I telling You this, well You will see in a moment. In that I didn’t find out about my having been born “intersexed” until I reached the age of 54; I had always wondered about what all was entailed as to all of the surgeries to correct said birth deformities both external as well as internal, surgeries which went on until I reached the age of 23. In that I first experienced a visitation of “Angels” at said experience at the age of two, I have been a devout Believer in Christianity everysince; and although I was sexually molested by both sexes (professional People that I was in the care of such as Night Nurse, Old Time 1st Grade School Marm, & 6th Grade Tutor, not to mention Others) until I reached the age of 23, due to my having been born intersexed; I knew in my Christian heart and Soul that what They had done to me was wrong. Shortly thereafter I was in a sexless marriage for 16 years, where as due to my having been born both sterile and impotent, my then Wife had committed adultery throughout, I found out at the time of Our divorce. Therefore My study of the various World’s Christian religions in order to try and find out what my particular station in life was to be as far as my having been born an intersexed Individual as to Christianity. Since various Christian religions kept refering me to the Bible’s passages on “Eunuchs”; I then decided that due to my own personal religous beliefs, and with my being unable to get a clear answer from the various World’s Christian religions that I had inquired of; I’m afraid that I have remained celibate as well as a martyr towards my Christian beliefs these past 40 years at least, in that I so want to eventually make it into God’s Heaven.
Now I ask of You, does that seem right, that I should forfeit my having of a sex life, due to the way that I was born, having been born intersexed; yet I have still remained a devout Christian since the age of two,despite all the above, as I knew in my Christian heart and Soul, that what I have lived through as far as the treatment of others towards Me due to my having been born Intersexed was wrong. What’s an Intersexed born Person supposed to do if They are unable to get a clear answer from the World’s Christian religions as to how They should live their life. Well in my case at least, You can see what my rash decision has been. Although my post does not answer the original Poster’s post, my post does further the point towards receiving an answer from the Highest Source of the Catholic faith, as well as other Worldly Christian religions.
