My ex-wife was friends with a girl who was a Reform Jew. One summer, she studied in Isreal and came back WAY Orthodox. She would not sit at the same table that I was at.

I agree about distraction during prayer, but it is an antiquated idea that the women are distracting the men and the inverse is not correct.

Well, the answer to that would be that the men believe that they have an obligation to pray – that it is a positive commandment that applies to men only. Women are not similarly obligated. So thier being distracted would not be a sin.

He says that a lot of the sexual precautionary rules are grounded on the premise that men can’t control themselves. But he’s modern orthodox: beanie but no curls. Shakes hands with (gasp) WOMEN!

Why is it that there is no commandment stating thou shall not covet your neighbor’s husband? Why does this commandment seem to apply to men only? Any thoughts?

So they don’t end up in the same position as David did with Bathsheba? (I do know that David came along after the Commandments were given, but see what can happen? Maybe God forsaw this).

It’s an antiquated worldview where men dominated and believed women incapable of such acts (they sure are proving them wrong today, by all accounts women commit adultery as much or more than men). That IF the act occured it was because the man was pressing the issue, therefore the commandment is directed at men specifically, but I still think the commandment encompasses both sexes.

lol! Yeah you are right! Could you translate this to a married woman having an affair with another man (married or unmarried)? Women can be a victim of a man pretending to be unmarried.

Under the biblical view, a woman sleeping with a married man would not be adultry. It would be fornication. (assuming the married man isn’t married to her. If it was with her husband, it would be “yippie!”)

Well there’s homosexuals, many men have commited adultery with other men, there’s the plain fact that plenty of men lie to women and tell them they aren’t married (certainly the unsuspecting woman can’t be considered an adulter, fornicator yes, adulterer no.).
