Is a more accurate translation of this commandment: “Thou shalt not take an innocent life”?

Thanks,
ClemtheCatholic 🙂

Hmmm actually I believe a better translation is “Thou shall not murder”

You are warranted to take another human life for self defense in ordinary life and in battle due to war, what we are not allowed is to take another human life for motives that are inmoral, revenge, lust, etc.
The “innocence” of the victim plays no role, since first, no one on earth can claim to be innocent, only Jesus was innocent.

mmmm your washing your hands on war, war can be murder, if you morality know mass killing a village is wrong for no reason like some of the things that happened when Americans shot people during MI lei massacre, then its murder no matter if your at war, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/My_Lai_Massacre

you cant cheat god, its not a human system, god knows what you are thinking, you can say whatever you want in front of him, but he already knows why you killed if you killed,

a famous line from kingdom of heaven

"
Remember that howsoever you are played or by whom, your soul is in your keeping alone, even though those who presume to play you be kings or men of power. When you stand before God, you cannot say, “But I was told by others to do thus,” or that virtue was not convenient at the time. This will not suffice. Remember that. "

The Catechism, to which we should always refer, states here:
The deliberate murder of an innocent person is gravely contrary to the dignity of the human being, to the golden rule, and to the holiness of the Creator. The law forbidding it is universally valid: it obliges each and everyone, always and everywhere …]
The fifth commandment forbids direct and intentional killing as gravely sinful. The murderer and those who cooperate voluntarily in murder commit a sin that cries out to heaven for vengeance.
And while JerryZ is to an extent correct in that “we have all sinned”, the Catechism does speak of murder as involving “an innocent person”, because there are many layers of meaning to the words. Just as when speak of the “communion of saints” we call saints also those in the Church Militant (that is, you and me), yet we offer veneration as “saints” only to those canonized by the Church, and at the same time we profess our faith to Christ as we say: “tu solus Sanctus”.

I take “thou shalt not kill” to a higher level myself. I take it to mean thou shalt not kill anything.

So, little buggies and spiders found in my house are usually captured and released.

I am weird though. LOL. 😛

I believe you are correct.

The Ten Commandments were in place when death by stoning was the punishment for adultery or blasphemy.

Do you also refuse antibiotics?

Sorry I am not washing my hands, 😦 How killing an indefense non combatant is NOT murder? You make no sense and are twisting my meaning!
However war CAN be just and people ARE killed in them. Does NOT make such killings Murder! Therefore you would not be breaking that commandment. This is what the Church teaches.

no, with all my illnesses, antibiotics have saved me plenty. Let me guess, there are buggies and things in antibiotics? lol
No, the antibiotics kill the buggies and things in your body that make you sick.

LOL. good point. Ok, there are bad buggies out there, its true.

I just meant for me personally, I try not to kill anything innocent. There are times when a cockroach did not make it out alive. I always feel guilty after smashing it though. 😉

The original Hebrew is “לא תרצח”: “lo tirtzach”; Thou shalt not murder.

Had it been “Thou shalt not kill”, then it would have been written: “לא תהרוג”: “Lo taharog”.

Ecclesiastes 3:

***1 To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:

2 A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;

3 A time to kill, and a time to heal… ***

Thank you! This is the reply everyone hopes to read when this question is asked!

murder is the only word that makes sense.

it refers to human not animal
and to the innocent human.

It only applies to humans. We are free to kill bugs etc.

Thank you, sir! Your knowledge of the language is admirable and I sincerely thank you for sharing this with all of us! 🙂

Thank you.

Living in Israel does have its benefits, you know. 🙂

And also, all religious Jews learn the Torah in the original.

If you argue that the Hebrew verb רצח means “murder” (a legal term) then you would also have to render the act of a legally sanctioned execution in Nu. 35:30 as murder. In English we don’t refer to a legal execution as “murder” or “taking an innocent life.”
