Full disclosure that I have scrupulous tendencies and tend to look for sin in situations where it may/may not even be there.

Would it be sinful to not completely know if something is a sin or seriously sinful and do it anyway with the thought that you will try to figure it out and confess it later a separate sin in and of itself. If so, what would that sin be called?

I did think that it may be a sin and that it may be seriously sinful, but I also have been known to have a warped sense on that and am still not entirely sure if someone with a normal conscience would find it sinful/seriously sinful. I guess my question is, regardless of whether the sin was serious or even a sin at all is it sinful to have the thought process I had?

The answer to scrupulosity is to find yourself a regular confessor and/or spiritual director who understands the dynamic of the problem and address these questions to him…

Concerns over what is sin, and what is serious sin, can often be a problem of focus.
The person who worries over sin and dwells on NOT sinning, places before themselves a much larger and more difficult task than the person who dwells on how to please God.

Pleasing God is simple and involves all that flows out of a single word…Love. Move toward Love of neighbor for Love of God and automatically move away from sin.

I equate the problem to the visual analogy of the archer and his bow as he tries to hit the bulls eye of a target. The archer is not focused on what NOT to hit - the grass, trees, backstop, etc. Rather the archer is focused on one thing only - The target - the center of the target - and everything else fades into the background. The background, all that is around the target is of no consequence because it is not the target.

So it is with growing in holiness.
Jesus tells us that the road to perdition is wide. The gate to glory is narrow. He tells us that Love is the core, and root of all the law (and thus the commandments). So the target, is the narrow gate and the path is Love. Seek Love, show love think love and move toward the target. If you do so, you will find that you just naturally and automatically follow the “rules” and avoid sin.

This makes a lot of sense to me.

You need to have a regular confessor…and ask him to direct you. And to give you principles to guide you in regards to your scruples.

(A person with scrupulosity or scruples…can often at least in certain areas…like a ship without a rudder. He can see and fear sin where it is not…He needs to have various principles/ directions to help him judge…and he can be in a different boat than others due to his scruples. With the help of his confessor and principles given him…he can then *“dismiss scruples” *act against them…for scruples are to be dismissed not argued with)

So it would be best if you speak with your confessor on this matter.
