Thoughts about wearing crucifix outside clothing?

What do you think about wearing a crucifix as an outward sign of your faith and a sacramental. I have a short “beach” necklace and am seriously considering attaching a wooden crucifix to. The crucifix comes from an old rosary that tore apart. I will dispose of the rosary properly but the crucifix is so nice.

Obviously it depends on the clothing you’re wearing that day. If I wear a hoodie (I am male) it wouldn’t work well. Same goes for other sweaters.

I currently wear a Brown Scapular with constantine shield on one side and St.Michael on the other. It is always underneath my clothing as the slight feeling of wool reminds me to follow our Lord Jesus Christ.
 
I don’t know where you live, but here in Texas, people wear visible crucifixes a lot.
 
I like it, but I don’t do it myself. I got a necklace from the Vatican during a trip there. It has a crucifix like the one on Pope JPII’s sceptre. The only reason I don’t wear it is because I’m kind of active, and will very likely break the necklace and lose it.

I am bothered by the new fad of wearing crosses, which is popular with rap “artists” and other entertainers. They wear them while doing obviously immoral things. I think the intent is to cheapen the impact of the crucifix.
 
Every day I wear a small gold crucifix outside my clothing.
 
Personally I find it comforting to see other Catholics display a sign of their faith.

Personally, I don’t think many of them are aware of just how sinful they are. We cannot judge their intent. I believe most of them honestly are Christians, and do believe in God, but they are just so confused and weren’t really taught well growing up they don’t know any better.

It starts conversations a lot of times. I wear blessed medals and it’s great because only the really smart ones will see what it is and ask 😉 Once a man asked which saint I had (complete stranger, when I was working) and he ended up being on the verge of enrolling in RCIA (and of course I encouraged him to!!) and his Catholic wife had given him one of the patron saint of pilots to wear when he flew. Also, once a lady was wearing a crucifix and I asked her, oh, you’re Catholic, and she wasn’t! She was an Anglican, but her exact words were, no I’m Anglican, but I’m very devout. The way she said this very much sounded like she was contemplating the step up to Catholicism. Also gave her some encouragement!! It’s also nice to talk with fellow catholics and give encouragement through little jokes, like “oh, there’s not very many of us around here!”

Father Amorth, the chief exorcist of Rome, also recommends wearing sacred images on our persons. Even through in his pocket, once a car full of people off to pray an exorcism was saved from an accident because of the driver’s brand new medal!

A lady at the bookstore joked that we Catholics weigh ourselves down with all these chains and metal and such. (her sister wears a bunch as penance :D) Go ahead and just do it!

Every day, I wear a necklace with a crucifix, and a medal of my saint - St. Clare - both blessed, outside my clothes. “Preach the Gospel at all times and when necessary use words.” - St. Francis. The crucifix serves to remind me how He expects me to conduct myself, and that He is always with me. St. Clare - she’s my friend. 🙂
 
I say wear it outside your clothing. Who knows, someone may ask you about it and give you a chance to share the good news with them. It may save souls. I’d say that is a very worthwhile thing in and of itself.
 
i wear mine outside my shirt. but if i have a jacket on, its inside the jacket for practicality, so i wouldn’t be moving it in or out of the jacket when i move between indoors and outdoors
 
I have a nice silver one I linked onto a chain. My grandma says it was once on a rosary (not blessed, as far as we know) but the rosary broke long before I was even thought of. I wear it outside my clothes; it lays beautifully against my Subway uniform! 😉 But I love wearing it. You see protestants (and Catholics too, I’m sure) wearing crosses, and Jews wearing the Star of David; why shouldn’t we wear a symbol of OUR faith? I mean, the crucifix isn’t exactly owned by the Catholic church, but it’s a distinctly Catholic symbol. Wear it proud!
 
i wear a wooden benedictine crucifix. i have to admit that sometimes i feel so shy to wear it outside my clothing because others might think i am indirectly telling them that i’m “holier than you”.

Wearing the crucifix is a very good reminder for me of God’s presence. Whenever I’m doing something that is not good, ie talking about the bad traits of a classmate, I am being reminded by the Lord through the crucifix that what I’m doing is a sin.

“Do not be ashamed to practice any act of virtue before others and do not omit any good deed for fear of scorn or praise, when you know that God demands it of you” (2.6)

Many people here in the Philippines wear crucifix, scapulars, etc… But some use it for fashion and I am so sad about it. They match rosaries or crucifix with immodest clothings. I feel so bad to see the Lord being treated as a “fashion.”😦
 
I don’t wear a crucifix, but occasionally do wear a cross (of the russian orthodox style.)
Recently I have started wearing a scapular, and I think it has helped me resist temptation.
 
It really depends on the Crucifix that I’m wearing.
I generally wear two.
The Gold one that my Grandma gave me- It’s on a Short-ish chain, so if I put it out of my shirt, It’ll make its way inward, and vice versa.

If I’m wearing the rather large Papal Crucifix, on the Long chain, it stays inside.
 
I am a craddle Catholic but for some miyteroius reason never saw anyone wear a crucifix growing up. When I moved to the big city at 17 is when I first remember seeing people wear them. At around 19, my life was a mess. I wanted to do something for God. So I though long about it and decided to start wearing a crucifix around my neck. I was really shy to do it so I can relate to you questioning how it will appear. I was so shy that I bought the smallest crucifix I could find. (it probably was intended for a young child). I don’t know what ever happened to it but I do rememeber it falling off all the time and me ‘miracously’ finding it on the pavement.

I now wear a normal size cross and am I ever glad I do. Whenever in public and I want to cross myself without making a scene, I touch the cross around my neck and God knows what I am thinking. It has gotten to the point that if I am out and I realize I forgot to put it on, I get a little panicky and I pray, ‘God I forgot my cross, if something bad happens what will I do? Please be with me anyway’ And my fear goes away

Add me to the fact that I wear a crucifix around my neck inside sometimes or outside my clothes. I bought a beautiful crucifix at some markets interstate when I was 18 years old and until this day still wear one. I am now 36.

However I just completed a 10 month RCIA program and after my baptism, eucharist and confirmation my Mum bought me a beautiful 9 ct gold crucifix with christ on it…On the same chain I have a beautiful medalion of Mother Mary and Jesus as a child huddling together with a protective clear coating on it. It is also gold and hand painted. I brought this for my self as a celebration through to the catholic faith.

My husband was baptised catholic at birth and we also baptised our two sons catholic so now we are finally the same as one…And I must say I couldn’t be happier.

It does create some attention from some people when they see it. Some people think your a huge church freak and don’t say too much at all…Others smile and ask some questions…The necklace with the pendants are only normal in size and not overly large. I wear them both with absolute pride and yes it reminds me that Christ is always with me and also to resist sin.

This morning at mass was my second time in recieving communion with my family…I’m so glad I was called to my parish and church. I will continue going to mass every Sunday…although my family don’t get it, and understand why I want to do that…they are Anglican but are not frequent church goers either…

Well done to my fellow Neophytes out there. We finally made it and now can fully partake with our parish to recieve the precious body and blood of christ…Well done…Thanks be to God.

Me too I never take my crucifix off.
I also have a rosary hanging in my car and two prayer cards and in my purse i carry
a prayer card that says “if anyone finds this I am a Catholic and please get a priest”.
I touch my crucufix many times throughout the day.
 
I started wearing a cross or crucifix every day when some of my many agnostic / atheist / humanist / pagan friends repeatedly started making Catholic or “dumb Christian” jokes in front of me, not realizing I was Catholic (and then forgetting again later - obviously, they weren’t extremely close friends if they couldn’t even remember my faith). They were probably more embarressed than I was, and it seemed like a kindness to make it visible to them to avoid such akwardness.

I’m also especially careful to wear Christian jewelry to job interviews, as I once experienced discrimination that led to a hostile work environment shortly after they learned that I was devout Christian. I don’t want to have to go through that again.
