Thoughts about wearing crucifix outside clothing?

That would be horrible for people to basically attack you in a work enviroment for being Catholic. How aweful for you. Yeah truthfully I probably wouldn’t wear mine to an interview but once I got the job it would be definately part of my uniform as I do now at work. The crucifix and pendant never comes off.

People at work don’t criticize me because of it…Sometimes it is clearly visible. My chain is a long one so most of the time it stays close to me. However I do get a lot of questions from my young work collegue. He doesn’t believe at all and just prods at me sometimes. All good though, I tell the truth how it is and he loses interest pretty quick. Hahah his loss I say.

I have found my faith and I’m proud to wear it… Glad everyone else can feel the same…
 
I just realized that Christian persecution really exist in places of work. That’s so sad.

I do as well. I also love seeing the brown or white cord of a scapular peeking out of someones shirt collar from time to time. I immediately feel a connection with them.

My crucifix for daily wear is a ring. (I wear a couple of medals on a chain around my neck, outside my shirt, and a rosary ring as well.) I have only ever received compliments on any of my religious jewelry.

Both of my young children have crucifix pendants that they wear along with a medal around their neck. My DH wears his own devotionals but carries his crucifix in his pocket along with a rosary.

I, too, wear a brown scapular and the straps often show (specially in the summer). I used to take tiny safety pins and pin it to the insides of my blouses, but I don’t bother anymore. If it shows, it shows. Sometimes I carry on entire conversations with cashiers, people on the bus, etc. and afteward realize that Our Lady and St. Simon Stock have joined in on the fun and are happily peaking out.

I just bought a rather large sterling silver crucifix that I think was designed for a man. I’ve been hesitating to wear it because it’s so large (it’s also really lovely, has a feminine design even for its size). Now after reading everyone’s posts I’m going to wear it. 😉

Two responses- I have to smile because it is true. Wearing a crucifix will get responses, particularly if I wear one in my very Mormon environment!!

And since you mentioned it, others have told me that when I do get a crucifix or cross to wear that I should have it blessed. Another “newby” question - so I should take it with me and following Mass ask our Priest to bless it? I guess I should take my rosary along too?

Will someone please tell me something about sacramentals?

However I just completed a 10 month RCIA program and after my baptism, eucharist and confirmation my Mum bought me a beautiful 9 ct gold crucifix with christ on it…On the same chain I have a beautiful medalion of Mother Mary and Jesus as a child huddling together with a protective clear coating on it. It is also gold and hand painted. I brought this for my self as a celebration through to the catholic faith.

My husband was baptised catholic at birth and we also baptised our two sons catholic so now we are finally the same as one…And I must say I couldn’t be happier.

It does create some attention from some people when they see it. Some people think your a huge church freak and don’t say too much at all…Others smile and ask some questions…The necklace with the pendants are only normal in size and not overly large. I wear them both with absolute pride and yes it reminds me that Christ is always with me and also to resist sin.

This morning at mass was my second time in recieving communion with my family…I’m so glad I was called to my parish and church. I will continue going to mass every Sunday…although my family don’t get it, and understand why I want to do that…they are Anglican but are not frequent church goers either…

Well done to my fellow Neophytes out there. We finally made it and now can fully partake with our parish to recieve the precious body and blood of christ…Well done…Thanks be to God.

I wear the Miraculous Medal and a Sacred Heart of Jesus medal outside my clothing, in the hope of spreading these devotions. I wear a crucifix under my shirt. The reason I wear the crucifix under my shirt rather than outside is to symbolically hide my sufferings. Hiding the crucifix is one of my “physical prayers,” a prayer made through symbolic action rather than speech, with the intention that God may help me to hide my sufferings and become united with His Passion in humility.

That’s just my personal practice. I very much enjoy seeing people wearing the crucifix outside their clothes, provided they do so with devotion to Christ. If they wear the crucifix while not taking their faith seriously, or simply as a cultural ornament, this bothers me.
 
i’ve never hear anyone mention anything about my crucifix at work

but frankly, i don’t care. here in Canada, religious rights have been protected for many. Muslim women are allowed to wear their head coverings, Sikh men are allowed to wear their turbans, even on passport photos and in lieu of helmets where it is required (motorcycles and hard hat areas). why should people stop me from wearing my crucifix necklace?
 
I thank you even for the question, which I have often had myself, but did not think to post! I do not wear my crucifix outside my clothing often, but I greatly admire those who do. God bless!
 
How very interesting.

For the first few months after converting I wore one outside my clothing. After a while I began to doubt my motives. And then I began to feel a little self conscious.
Now I only wear it on the outside on Good Friday.

I’ve only ever seen one other layman wear a visible crucifix. And even he’s stopped recently.

But this is encouraging. I think I’ll look for a proper chain and start again. 🙂
 
I live in Scotland so maybe things are different here, but wow, I can’t imagine wearing a crucifix being a problem. I had a Protestant friend over here who wore a crucifix ALL the time. Her son bought it for her, not understanding/knowing the difference between a plain cross and a crucifix - she was a Christian so he figured she’d want to wear her Lord 👍

My parish priest doesn’t like to see people wearing a rosary outside of clothes, but another priest told me it is perfectly acceptable; he likes to see it. There are some things that we seem to be free to follow our own hearts about, and I LOVE the Catholic Church ❤️

WELCOME HOME!! It brought me great joy to read this post! 😃

I have three necklaces that I wear all the time. They never come off. One is my scapular, which I wear inside my shirt because to me it is a very personal thing, then I have a chain with a bunch of different saint medals which are all very special to me. Right now I have Saint Anthony, Saint Patrick, Saint Joan of Arc, and Our Lady of Perpetual Help and I’m hoping to soon get a Solanus Casey and a Saint Micheal one as well. This one also stays inside my shirt. I also have a chain with my Miraculous medal and Crucifix. The Crucifix is very important to me because it came from Rome and is blessed by the Pope and is also a third class relic of Solanus Casey.
I use it not only as a witness to others but also as a reminder to myself of my deep love of the Crucified Christ and that He has given Himself Crucified to me, to carry in my heart and show to the world. It’s also a reminder to me of my call to marriage to Christ and spiritual motherhood because they say that the marriage bed of a religious is the cross.

I wear my “Divine Mercy” necklace. Love it! “Don’t leave home without it”!!! 😃
 
I can’t wear anything on a chain at work just for safety sake, for fear it may get caught in machinery and hang me. But I do have a clip-on St. Christopher medal that I wear on a jacket pocket and that has sparked the odd question from the curious.

I would love to wear a Crucifix at all times. Others here have mentioned other faiths and I couldn’t help thinking of the Seikhs. I admire those guys just for the fact that they will put up with all kinds of mocking and abuse because of their turban, all for their faith. I pray that I would have that kind of fortitude and faithfulness to our Lord Jesus Christ should the occasion arise.

So by all means wear the crucifix. But remember that it is visible to everyone, and they will associate you and what you do with our Lord when they see it. At times on the weekends when I wear mine, it causes me to be more thoughtful, more mindful of my actions, my attitudes and my language for fear of bringing shame on the name of Jesus, and that in my case is sometimes just what I need.
 
I work with the public so I display it somewhat discreetly… as I am concerned it might create conflict with my current employer… it’s against the “employee policy” to discuss politics, religion, etc… because it might “misrepresent” the brand…

but to clarify…

I keep a few different devotional medals given to me throughout my life under my clothes, those I keep hidden because I do not want Protestant-Christians to misunderstand them.

I wear a St. Benedict Cross (all non-precious metal) slightly above the open in my collar, so you can see the corpus and Benedict medal… mostly because I’ve been inspired to make a public profession of faith in Christ and to try and push myself to be bolder in devotion and lose my fear of public declaration of faith in Christ.

In other words, I’m dipping my toes in the water ; )

Also, I agree with the poster above… have to keep mindful of public actions… but I try to practice Charity with everyone I encounter, so I hope that sends the right message.

Yes, take it to mass, and after the mass is over and most of the people have left, Approach the priest or deacon and ask him to bless your items.
 
I don’t see any sign of ‘Extra Faith’ in someone wearing a Crucifix outside the clothing. Though the greatest symbol of Christianity especially for us Catholics, I don’t like and would like to wear it outside my clothe or shirt. For one, it is fast becoming a fashion statement which it is not meant for. Everyone around the world is beginning to take it that way regardless of their religion or belief in it. So, I advice, as a Christian brother, that you do not encourage this ‘wrong misuse’ of our Crucifix. Jesus said, when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your father in heaven who sees and hears everything. He also adds one should not be like hypocrites who like to stand on the roadside and pray wailing so that everyone might see them.

In this context of our Lord, it is best that you keep your faith to yourself and wear the Crucifix inside your clothing.If you really want to show your faith, let it be your work for the love our Lord and he will surely bless you.

The crosses that I have seen worn as “fashion statements” are usually studded with rhinestones, or other colored stones. They are more decorative than devotional. You can see them hanging in department stores with other costume jewelry.

It is quite a different thing to wear a crucifix that is adorned only with the Body of our Lord.
 
I have a crucifix I wear on Fridays. The rest of the week I wear my Holy Face medal. I wear them outside my clothes, but both of them have kind of short chains, so, depending on my blouse, sometimes they kind of sneak underneath.

I have a lovely pendant with an image of Mary with Baby Jesus that says “Pray for the unborn” on it that I bought from a lady on eBay who makes them. I was wearing it on the last anniversary of Roe v. Wade and was in line at a deli to order lunch when the man standing in front of me turned around, looked at it and then said, “I like your necklace.” He then went on to tell me that he and his wife had adopted two daughters and that sometimes it occurred to him that, if their biological mother had “made another choice,” they would not have been blessed with these lovely girls. I told him that I had several cousins who were adopted, as well. When I had gotten my order and was on my way out, I passed the table where he and his wife were sitting. He motioned me over so that he could introduce me to his wife and show her my necklace. I still get a little teary-eyed when I think about it.
