Thoughts create matter?

I’ve heard from a number of New Agers that claim a thought creates matter, and is measurable by scientific apparatuses and continues outward from the person. I asked for the data and never received it.

Is this a scientific claim backed by evidence or another pseudo-science?

Also, wouldn’t this violate the first law of thermodynamics?

Any thoughts (no pun) on the subject would be great.

Thoughts do create new neural pathways which did not exist before; but sadly, thoughts cannot create neurons.

But might a lot of thinking activity lead to more synapses, glial cells, cephalic blood flow, etc?

Thoughts may move electrons across synapses, or is it the other way around; electrons moving across synapses create thoughts. However it is, thinking may influence cephalic blood flow;

“Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the cephalic blood flow patterns of subjects with frequent headaches during a headache induction procedure. Thirty-six subjects with muscle-contraction, migraine, or mixed headache symptoms were exposed to a 1-hr stressor designed to induce a headache while multiple cephalic blood volume pulse amplitude (BVPA) was measured. Thirty subjects reported a headache during the procedure, and the procedure was associated with significant changes in several cephalic BVPA measures. Between-group differences were found for several cephalic BVPA sites and there were significant correlations between induced headache activity and cephalic BVPA measures for most subjects. The results support causal roles for psychosocial stressors and cephalic blood flow in muscle-contraction and migraine headache.”

If thinking happy thoughts reduces stress and then improves the cephalic blood flow situation then thoughts have indeed influenced matter. But I don’t think they have created matter yet.

While the PEARS experiments substantiate that thought can affect matter, I don’t know of any research that shows thought transforms energy into matter, though our thoughts do transform matter into energy, obviously.

Well then you still have human thought creating physical result.
A micro version of mind over matter?

Actually they don’t. The matter in our heads got there from the protein in our blood, and the energy from the breath in our lungs. All thought does is to redirect the energy and restructure the matter.

I don’t know. I know I can twiddle my fingers over this keyboard and that is a macro version of mind over matter, if you like. In humans free thought and their physical bodies are parts of a harmonious whole being. The idea that I put my thoughts to war against my neurons to achieve mind over matter is funny. Mind and matter [and soul] for humans together create a single balanced being, don’t they?.

Yes they do. The “soul” Scripturally is the entire live (human) being.

Life or “psyche” (your mind is a life function) meld with body substance to create the physical human being, a “soul.” Remove either and no being, nobody, is there.

When people say “mind over matter”, they don’t mean that thoughts are at war with their own head and body! That’s even more ridiculous than your muscles being at odds with your skin!! Rather, it has to do with your mind, through the mystery of the neurons of your head, creating the redirection of energy and the reshaping of matter to produce that wonder of the living world, the moving breath-filled human being.

If we have free will, then it seems our thoughts must violate the First Law and conservation of momentum. Otherwise the ions in our nerve cells which transmit signals would simply go where natural laws make them go. To freely change what happens in our brains requires that certain atoms/molecules must change their natural course or perhaps even be created. I’m not well-versed on how the nervous system operates, but I do know that freely changing the natural course of particles violates the basic laws of physics. You exert a force on them without being forced back, you change the total momentum of the system, and depending on how free we are we may create the ions necessary for the transmission of a signal.

But then there’s always the indeterminacy of quantum mechanics to consider. 🤷

Actually, they do. Concentrated thought burns calories which generates heat which is a form of energy. Whether thought produces some form of electromagnetism is unresolved. What we are calling matter can, by the use of energy, be turned into a different form of matter, or energy or both. Thinking, as in by intent a person tries to solve a problem in their mind, creates an increase in electrochemical activity.

No; momentum is conserved. Apart from any physical movement being microscopically small; any momentum imparted to ions in the synapses will be absorbed by the structures within our heads. There is no net change of momentum occasioned by human thinking, free or otherwise.

And thinking creates no matter, either. Any material used in our thought has come up our neck in the bloodstream.

That is not a creation of energy, but simply a conversion from chemical to thermal energy. This is standard chem-101.

The energy liberated by the reaction C6H12O6 + 6O2 -----> 6H2O + 6CO2 is a known quantity. The heat energy that convects off your head during the thought process can be measured (presumably with some difficulty).

The 2 quantities will not be the same, reflecting the use of some energy in propelling ions through synapses and redirecting the head’s electric fields. The difference between the chemical and thermal energies can be described as the “energy of thought.”

If momentum is conserved then free will changes nothing in the body and is an illusion. Free will must alter the natural course of the particles, meaning their momentum is changed. It would be like a billiard ball moving straight suddenly veered 90 degrees right without a force being exerted on it. That is a violation of conservation. It doesn’t matter if it hits something else, because that only means the NEW momentum created by free will is now absorbed by whatever it hits. If it is caused to move any faster or slower, then that is creation or destruction of energy.

If you throw a rock, your “will” has changed the momentum of that rock. No momentum has been created however, as an equal amount of opposite momentum has been absorbed by your arm, shoulder, body, legs and transmitted to the ground.

When the rock hits the ground, the earth will absorb it’s momentum, as well, so that everything adds up nicely to zero.

Move the action inside your head and everything works the same. Only this time, it’s your neural structure, external head, and neck muscles that absorb all the counteracting momenta.

It’s not even a psuedo-science. Another way they like to express the same idea is “Energy Follows Thought.” So your individual thoughts can alter the universe. If you get cancer, you just “visualize” your body healing and getting well. The sick thing is that implies someone with cancer, or poverty, or whatever, is in that state due to their own deficiencies in “putting energy into the universe.”

I knew many, many people of this “new age” or “Aquarian” persuasion when I lived in California. Almost all of them just so happened to be housewives with wealthy husbands, so it was not difficult to indulge in this thinking and judge others who did not.

It’s great “blame the victim” thinkology. Thoughts creating matter is from Jane Roberts’ channeled spirit, Seth. She had a horrible death, btw. And it’s part and parcel of UNITY Village, where believers, as godlets, create reality from thoughts. Imagine the scrupulosity going on there. This is satanic stuff with homo sapiens wishing for godhood, like Hindu-ized Shirley MacLaine exclaiming, “I am god! I am god!” MacLaine also noted she made more moolah pimping her New Age channeled spirit–who urged all to do whatever “despicable” thing they want, you’re just expressing yourself–than in her many dreary films. This me-as-godism is a distillation of satanic Babylonian Mystery Religions, under which category falls Mormonism and Freemasonry and certain political megalomaniacs.

Oy. Check out Hannah Newman’s “The Rainbow Swastika” for the real, genocidal roots of the New Age movement from a Jewish perspective. These are source materials she quotes, not her opinion. And it’s grisly. “Let’s help welcome the earth’s cleansing by making others forcibly evolve to a higher plane” means let’s kill the Jews…and Christians, for that matter. UNITY Village had a speaker in Kansas City talk about their “Sons of God” movement that urges wiping out anybody who doesn’t adhere to their vision as, you know, their being the Sons of God who get to croak whoever doesn’t agree with them. Psychologically, these are people who hate their parents and don’t have the guts to admit it.

… my dear friend ,

… the only way i know that thoughts can create matter is by miraculous prayer and that can be real , as to these claims they smack of mind powers berfeft of true faith in the true god and his power and are most likely superstitious , though demons do help these people often and no doubt can deceive them …

… may god bless and love you 👍🙂 ,

I think you are missing my point. If the chemical signals in our brain are simply doing what natural laws are telling them to do (by conservation of momentum, energy, coulombic forces…) then what room is there for free will/free thoughts? I mean, there is a difference between just being aware of the causes for your actions and actually causing them by your free will. If free will doesn’t alter the motions of the chemicals in our brains, then how does free will produce thoughts and actions, such as throwing a rock? At some point in the process, our wills- which are immaterial and transcendent- must affect matter/energy. And our will does not experience an “equal and opposite reaction” when it moves matter. Therefore, there is a net change in energy or momentum.
