Thoughts create matter?

I think you are missing my point. If the chemical signals in our brain are simply doing what natural laws are telling them to do (by conservation of momentum, energy, coulombic forces…) then what room is there for free will/free thoughts? I mean, there is a difference between just being aware of the causes for your actions and actually causing them by your free will. If free will doesn’t alter the motions of the chemicals in our brains, then how does free will produce thoughts and actions, such as throwing a rock? At some point in the process, our wills- which are immaterial and transcendent- must affect matter/energy. And our will does not experience an “equal and opposite reaction” when it moves matter. Therefore, there is a net change in energy or momentum.
So, lets say I use my will [which might be part of my soul, and non-material] and I freely imagine an area of the colour red. Then I imagine an area of the colour blue. And then red again.
So presumably there are electrons running one way first and then the other almost opposite way and then back again!
If I keep doing this I will get tired and tell myself to stop, now. So now my will experiences an equal and opposite reaction.

Well I don’t think it’s correct to say your will gets tired. Some chemical process occurs in your brain that creates the sensation of boredom and somehow motivates your free will to will something else. Who knows how the flesh affects our will?

But regardless, if our will is indeed immaterial and free, then it can’t have momentum or kinetic energy and therefore it creates a net change when it affects matter.

I did’nt mean my will gets tired only that its making me tired.
Is that what you mean?

It is better to think of one’s mind/will as redirecting energy, rather than creating it.

Just as no unphysical (ie, physically disallowed) process need be invoked in describing how a human body throws a rock, (every sub-process being describable in terms of neurology, biochemistry and limb mechanics); neither need unphysicality be invoked in describing our use of our heads. Every electron-volt in there is accountable for using neurobiological and computational principles. As with the human body and a rock, what “will” does is redirect an existing flow of mass/energy.

ICXC NIKA.

That is not a creation of energy, but simply a conversion from chemical to thermal energy. This is standard chem-101…
When you get to Quantum Mechanics-1099, we might be able to have a dialogue.

At any rate, science shows thought affects matter external to the human body, I already posted the link.

There is no reason humans shouldn’t be able to create matter, Jesus did. And He said we could do all that He could do. People pray, food multiplies. We don’t understand the mechanism. Can easily be our thoughts with a Divine catalyst.

Whenever you can post an instance of someone multiplying food, or healing a congentially blind person with only his hands and some mud, or awakening himself from death; then you will have made your point.

There are no such instances post-Jesus in Scripture. We are not God, HE was.

OK, within minutes of trying to ‘on-think’ a ham sandwich into being, I heard gunshots, a women screaming and a car wreck.

Perhaps I am doing this wrong.

You must think Russian! THINK RUSSIAN!

(penny to the smarty who cites that movie quote 😛 )

Conclusion here, correct me if I’m wrong, is there is no study that supports this out landish claim that thoughts create matter, empirical or otherwise. Medical it shows thoughts only stir already existing chemical components in the being, nothing is brought into existence. Physically thoughts are only directing existing energy/matter, whether that energy/matter is idle or in motion, FLTD is not violated. Whether the thoughts are created by the biochemistry of the brain or originate from the person’s soul, nothing materially is created in the corporeal sense.

Theological, I’d like to see a discussion on this. In light of this verse

[BIBLEDRB]Rev 21:27[/BIBLEDRB]

In other translations it states “nothing unclean”. Do sinful thoughts create sin, as if it was a immaterial “dirt” (for lack of a better term) of the body in the spiritual realm? Or do the sinful thoughts allow sin to stain the being from an external source?

Rev 21:27 (Douay Rheims)
27 There shall not enter into it any thing defiled, or that worketh abomination or maketh a lie, but they that are written in the book of life of the Lamb.

I’d say the first. After all, sin begins in our mind or will (both faculties of the “soul”); prior to being acted out via the voice, limbs, or other body systems; the human body, whether alive or dead, does not contain sin. And our LORD Himself said that what is external does not “defile” anybody.

You must be getting some sort of interference from some movie you watched.

To do this successfully, you must put on the movie Babe and concentrate.😃

Actually, they do. Concentrated thought burns calories which generates heat which is a form of energy. Whether thought produces some form of electromagnetism is unresolved. What we are calling matter can, by the use of energy, be turned into a different form of matter, or energy or both. Thinking, as in by intent a person tries to solve a problem in their mind, creates an increase in electrochemical activity.
Exactly. Thinking not thought. Thinking is an activity so obviously causes physiological changes. Thought does not do that.

Thinking (the process) is what burns the calories - it is not the thought.

When we are concentrating hard, all body is involved so this stress heightens the temperature and causes some physiological changes.

But it is NOT the thought itself.

To say that thought creates matter is to say that the thought itself (the thought of being thin) is what causes one to be thin.

Maybe you are missing something here… Jesus happens to be God.

People pray, food multiplies all because God multiplied them.

If God so wished, He can make our thought produce whatever He wishes. It happens to saints all the time. But it is not the saints who do it, it is God.

Which brings me to a question. Are you sure you are Catholic? I think you are more New Age in your thinking than Catholic.

I’ve heard of that! Is’nt there a ‘think thin’ diet? Is this a sort of heretical ‘thought creates matter’ sect?

There is definitely a think thin diet, but no one gets thin just by thinking it. Let’s put that to the test and maybe you can just think thin and load up on the calories and sit on the couch all day.

And not it is not heretical - just plain absurd based on scientific fact.

Indeed… [25] And which of you, by taking thought, can add to his stature one cubit?

Well, you certainly won’t get rich soon. You will have to split the penny with GE Eddie. That is if Trevor does pay up. 😃
If I can get this ‘onthink’ thing down, I will not need money.

Nobody’s been killed yet…I’ll keep trying.😉

I’ve heard from a number of New Agers that claim a thought creates matter, and is measurable by scientific apparatuses and continues outward from the person. I asked for the data and never received it.

Is this a scientific claim backed by evidence or another pseudo-science?

Also, wouldn’t this violate the first law of thermodynamics?

Any thoughts (no pun) on the subject would be great.

Pax
there’s nothing incoherent behind the idea of thoughts creating matter. As a matter of fact, that’s how god created the universe. Now, whether that actually happens in our world through human minds is another matter altogether, i do not know of any evidence of such thing occurring so I would Assume that the answer is not.,

As for “violating” the laws of thermodynamic, such laws seem to be regularities of the universe.there’s nothing incoherent about something opposing such regularities. 👍
