JesusEstelle,

Please know that there are people who want to, and who can, help by talking to you person-to-person and sharing good ideas that will lift you up out of your temporary darkness.

The internet is kind of impersonal.

Real people. Real time. Real life.
Please make someone else happy by letting them help you. 🙂

Don’t solve a temporary problem with a permanent solution. When in times of depression or when having thoughts of suicide, remember that God sent His only begotten son to die for you! He loves YOU that much!👍:D:) Cling to Our Lady, The Blessed Virgin Mary. She is your mother who loves you with such a deep love. She wants the best for you. She wants to comfort you. She wants to help you. All you have to do is call for her, and she will come to assist you without a split second of hesitation. St. Jude is always willing to help those going through seemingly hopeless times. St. Jude is a miracle worker that certainly will NOT fail you! ewtn.com/Devotionals/novena/jude.htm
Pray The Rosary!!! Everyday, devoutly, and you will overcome this depression. I PROMISE you that!:D:D:D

I’m really sorry to hear you’ve been feeling poorly, emotionally. Depression is really hard, and maybe the cold and lack of sunlight probably also doesn´t help. Then, people are stuck in the house, “cabin fever”.

Are you in treatment, now, Dear?

Anyway, did you go back to your psychiatrist, tell him how you feel to see if he can increase your dosage or switch your meds? Even with medications that work, I’ve found many only work for a period of time, and then we can sort of like develop a “tolerance” to them. So, often, one needs to go back again and again, communicate this to your psychiatrist and PERSISTENCE is key!

Now, besides counseling and medication, there are other options…support groups…group counseling.

I’ve had depression a lot in my life, as well. Sometimes, it helps to talk to someone, a friend, to just get out of the house, to try to get some hobbies, especially hobbies that will get you out and socializing, meeting people.

Now, you may not even feel like doing that, but sometimes we need to do it anyway in the beginning.

I’ve found volunteering helpful in something I enjoy. I have found comfort in different things…pets…friends…creative hobbies…movies…books…music.

Sometimes, if the darkness of winter is getting to me, I light a candle…to bring myself a little more light and heat. I love the aroma, fragrance. I think they’re beautiful.

I find a hot bath helps relax me, feel better.

Certain songs help me…pick me up. Certain movies help me, as well.

I’d recommend during this time NOT to watch dramas or the news, or anything that will pull you down. What about a nice comedy, or romantic comedy? Although, men like action…shoot 'em ups…people jumping the sky…explosions.

Why not go out to a movie with a friend…or go out to eat? Break out!

What would make you feel better?

What about a cup of hot chocolate or tea, something warm, to warm you from the inside.

:coffee: This is for you! 😉

and this! 🍕

If you feel like crying, this…:tissues:

…and this! :hug1::grouphug:

As to purpose, is there something you can do that would help to give you a sense of purpose? I have a disability, so have had trouble working, and what I did to give myself purpose was volunteering.

I taught adults how to read and helped foreigners who (in the US), who were all alone, to get around, use the buses, etc.

I’ve worked as a volunteer with blind folks, helping them learn English (since it’s a requirement in many schools here, now, even in Mexico).

What about learning something new? taking a class? doing a hobby? If you don´t have a hobby, start one!

What do you LOVE to do? If you love the church, why not volunteer there?

I love teaching, so I teach folks, and I LOVE it! It gives me a sense of purpose.

Although, you HAVE purpose whether you feel like you do or not. That’s the truth, that you’re here for a reason, not some “accident”.

Anyway, God bless you, and God speed! Good luck! 👍

God did not give us life so we would feel pain.

God gave us life so we would be alive :):):):)!!!

Pain is just a side effect.

But escaping from The pain is not worth giving up life!

God bless and ICXC NIKA.

How are you dressing? When I’m depressed, you can more or less even tell just by the clothes I wear! Well, when I’m happy, I tend to use happy colors. When I’m sad, or depressed, I use other ones…grays, browns.

So…another idea is to try to surround yourself with nice things…beautiful colors that will uplift you.

Have you ever noticed anything that helps you feel better when you’re down?

I like to paint ceramics. I like music, bachata, specifically.

I’ve had when I’m depressed, and once, a friend of mine said we wouldn´t have class, then, that going out together would be more important.

She said that life sometimes smashes us against the rocks, again and again, and it’s good to go out, especially a friend or family, and have a cup of tea…or hot chocolate.

This will sound crazy, but start thanking and praising God for allowing your depression. This does not mean He gave it to you or wants you to have it, but in His infinite wisdom He has allowed it, just as He allowed St. Paul to be imprisoned, and Jesus to be crucified. You are a blessed daughter of God and He has things for you to do on earth, for a long long time. Praise Him in all circumstances and He will turn it to blessing.

Please call a suicide prevention hotline if you think you might harm yourself or other people. You can google search and find one that is open 24 hours. I’ll pray for you.

I was REALLY down of late over the holidays. It was to a point people noticed.

Well, one friend suggested I do sort of like a “make over”.

I was wearing clothes for a much older person…long skirts, not fitting right, old stuff, out of style.

So, I went out…got my hair cut, had them dye my hair (took all the gray out for the first time ever). I got my ears pierced and some nice earring. I got my nails done and got some beautiful, attractive clothes…happy clothes.

People IMMEDIATELY starting treating me differently! People who had ignored me suddenly started noticing, and talking to me.

I recommend you look at how you come across to others.

Often, when a woman is depressed, she won´t wear earrings, jewelry, will not wear makeup…and her clothes reflect it.

So…a way we can sort of trick ourselves into feeling better is by dressing differently, dressing as if we were happy.

I’ve also gotten a bunch of compliments and feel better about myself.

How’s your posture? Often, we slouch when we’re depressed. Try to stand up straight.

Anyway, it’s helped me feel better.

Take care of yourself. Eat right…exercise…tend to your health.

Praying for you. You need to be somewhere safe until you are no longer a threat to yourself. Hope you have a support system in place for the low periods.

Hi Jesus Estelle,

Are you able to get/perceive any pleasure out of life?
People often mention movies, flowers, family etc uplifting them but people arn’t aware that some people with depression arn’t able to get pleasure out of ANYTHING even the simple things-there’s just no perception or joy there.
Is this the case with you or no?

Are you able to exercise?

I also have struggled with depression and been in those dark places.
Remember when we are depressed our thoughts are often distorted and we aren’t thinking right. Other posters have given good advice.
Don’t give up. January is a difficult month. The holidays are over. We are beginning a new year and might be faced with financial problems or marriage or family problems and we are trying to see what direction we are going in the new year so there is a lot of stress.
Even though you might not see it right now you have influenced someone and will continue to touch people. You are here for a reason.
God bless!

I don’t know how much reading you’ve done on depression.

You do understand that you have a physical condition, right? This is like having a broken arm or diabetes or other physical condition. You need treatment, not advice from strangers on the internet-- and we all want you to not give up and get the treatment you need.

Clinical depression involves the brain failing to create new neurons resulting in actual shrinkage of some parts of the brain. Including the area thought to be responsible for processing positive emotion. Literally unable to entertain positive thoughts about oneself or anything else. As others have said, often medications need to be changed - don’t give up, find the right combination. Medication with therapy to unlearn habitual negative thought patterns has a much higher success rate than either therapy alone or medication alone. Exercise seems to have a similar affect to anti-depressants as well as regular conversations with close friends.

Gave you the link to the website above, I have not suffered from depression but have had several relatives who do/did. I am so sorry about what you’re going through and admire you for just continuing on. It is an awful, horrible disease not just sucking the joy from everything but robbing one of hope. It can get better, it can be treated, don’t give up. Understand the disease is the voice telling you to stop. The disease is telling you to give up. Not you. You’re still there, you can find and be yourself again. God bless you always, I will pray for you.

You’ll be included in my daily rosary. Please find a friend to talk to and do not give into the temptation to offend God by hurting yourself. You are His and He loves you inestimably, so please take care good of yourself. God bless you.

Please, please obtain the book, The Glories of Mary, by St. Alphonsus de Liguori and read it. It will help you more than you could ever imagine. God bless you.

Deacon Charlie Stump at Dallas Diocese has prayed over me in times of distress and by God’s grace been given great peace. Are there any spiritual retreats in your area? I experienced spiritual healing when I went on a spiritual retreat, so I highly recommend participating in a spiritual retreat.

Blessings,
Tiffany

I know how you feel… but I hope you can rely on Rosary which can give you peace and calm. And I believe Mary will protect you and comfort you. Everything will be alright. :o

A famous lady once said that if people made good use of the Confessional, we could put about 75% of the psychiatrists out of business. I am 100 percent certain that in most cases anyway, depression, anxiety and other mental issues have both a spiritual and a clinical component, and in many cases, the clinical aspect is brought on by the spiritual aspect, which is often caused by serious, habitual sin. I’m not saying that applies to the OP, but even so, Confession, Communion, the Anointing of the Sick, the Rosary, and many other forms of prayer will very likely help, over time, As others have said, living as positive a life as possible also helps. It will very likely take a wide variety of approaches, including exercise and proper diet. Pray morning, evening and night, and in between if possible. Develop a Litany, and recite that morning and night, or morning and evening. Work up a strong, rich prayer regimen that works for YOU, stick with it, Go to Confession weekly, and Mass as often as possible. I believe psych meds are seldom the answer, other than on a temporary basis if things turn chronic.

I believe you can find your way out of the woods, with the help of the Trinity and the Holy Family.

God bless you.
