Thoughts on a rosary for a man

Dear CAF,

I am ordering a hand-made rosary for my brother. He is in his early thirties and is not a practicing Catholic but still believes in our faith and I think this will be a good present for me to give him.

I want to get him a “manly” looking rosary that he would be comfortable with (in contrast to the kind our Grandmother had etc). I found a great site with rosaries that are hand-made by Carmelite sisters.

It seems like rosaries for men always have black beads. For our male CAF posters, do you like black, or do you find it depressing? I am thinking about going with brown beads. But I would welcome hearing from the guys on what type of rosary you prefer.

Hi Maria1212.Even though I have several Rosaries,My favorite is a brown olivewood bead Rosary that came in an olivewood box made in Bethlehem.The Crusifix is pewter with Jeruslem stamped on the back and Our Lady of Lourdes Relic Center piece(Bernadette and Our Lady).Olivewood takes several years to “cure” before it can be used.This Rosary is inexpencive at about $35.00 at EWTN.I think its great that you want to get your brother a Rosary.Whatever type you choose,I’m sure he will treasure your giftPeace,Rocky.

Wooden-beaded Rosaries are pretty cool.
 
My favorite rosary has hematite beads so they are shiny black/gray.
 
:twocents: I agree. I like wooden beads in any color, but my favorite is hematite – Not only for the looks, but also for the heft. 👍

My rosary is made from blue fishing cord. One of the priests in our parish makes them by hand (while hearing confessions, among other times).

I like it because it’s not shiny and not bulky at all.

what does he enjoy doing? my hubby is a mechanic and I thought about making him one out of nuts and washers or something like that, in place of the beads. I know you can buy the crucifix and centers for them. I also thought of making one from horseshoe nails (I’m a horsey one, and crafty!)… just haven’t gotten the free time and motivation yet… :rolleyes: but maybe incorporate his interests…

Wow! How creative! I make Rosary’s, too. And sometimes, I use natural rock pieces (chunks of turquoise, etc.)… for the Hail Mary beads; while using a fancier bead, for the Our Fathers.

Black. Black wood and uncoloured metal. I do carry around a brown wood and cord small one in my briefcase, but I rarely actually use it to pray.
 
A sturdy rosary that will not easily break.

My son likes a small rosary, that will easily fit in his pocket.

DH likes the knotted cord rosaries, they are so durable.

Do you think he will carry it with him? If he does, look for durability, double wrapped wire, etc.
 
Rocks are good for a man. If there is an Irish heritage, I always look for connemara marble for a masculine Rosary . . .
 
My favorite:
-Olive wood beads from Bethlehem. (Beads once rubbed with a little of Fr. Fontana’s prayer oil.)
-Papal crucifix.
-Had the nice guy from Dakota Rosary Works re-string it up at the Fargo Marian Congress with very fine flexible metal cable, so no links to break anymore.

Or, he could join the K of C. Black beads with indestructible double-linked chain. This one is my daily concealed carry weapon.

My current rosary is green plastic beads. My favorite (since lost 😦 ) was a wood bead rosary.
 
Does he have a favorite sports team? I once read about a nun in Wisconsin who was a huge Green Bay Packers fan, and would make green and gold rosaries to pray with during the football games. Perhaps you could get him a rosary in his team’s colors?

Personally, I prefer the ideas of the more quality beads already mentioned. But I just thought I’d throw this idea out there in case you were interested.
 
Thanks for all the great responses! I am leaning toward beads made of olive wood because it is “manly looking” and also very sturdy. Since he has been away from the church and probably hasn`t prayed the rosary since elementary school, I am also hoping to inspire him with something beautiful (manly beautiful!).

I am very glad to know there are so many men praying the rosary!
